Smoothness in Video Coding

چکیده

Most motion compensation methods dealt with in the literature make strong assumptions about the smoothness of the underlying motion eld. For instance, block-matching algorithms assume a blockwise-constant motion eld and are adequate under translational motion models; triangle motion compensation assumes a piecewise-planar motion eld, and this model captures zooming, warping and rotational motion very well. Time-varying imagery however, often contains both types of motion (as well as others) and hence exhibits a high degree of spatial variability in terms of its motion eld smoothness properties. We develop a simple method that performs spatial adaptation of the smoothness of the motion eld and demonstrate substantial improvements in video quality over a wide range of bit rates. To this end, we introduce the notion of a motion eld that is characterized by a set of labels which permits one to adaptively switch among a collection of diierent motion models locally. Each model is characterized by the smoothness of the underlying motion eld. The switched framework for motion compensation performs signiicantly better than each of its constituent motion models, in terms of both visual quality and signal-to-noise ratio.

Fast Intra Mode Decision for Depth Map coding in 3D-HEVC Standard

three dimensional- high efficiency video coding (3D-HEVC) is the expanded version of the latest video compression standard, namely high efficiency video coding (HEVC), which is used to compress 3D videos. 3D videos include texture video and depth map. Since the statistical characteristics of depth maps are different from those of texture videos, new tools have been added to the HEVC standard fo...

A Method to Reduce Effects of Packet Loss in Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding

Multiple description (MD) coding has evolved as a promising technique for promoting error resiliency of multimedia system in real-time application programs over error-prone communicational channels. Although multiple description lattice vector quantization (MDCLVQ) is an efficient method for transmitting reliable data in the context of potential error channels, this method doesn’t consider disc...

Compressed Domain Scene Change Detection Based on Transform Units Distribution in High Efficiency Video Coding Standard

Scene change detection plays an important role in a number of video applications, including video indexing, searching, browsing, semantic features extraction, and, in general, pre-processing and post-processing operations. Several scene change detection methods have been proposed in different coding standards. Most of them use fixed thresholds for the similarity metrics to determine if there wa...

Adaptive Spectral Separation Two Layer Coding with Error Concealment for Cell Loss Resilience

This paper addresses the issue of cell loss and its consequent effect on video quality in a packet video system, and examines possible compensative measures. In the system's enconder, adaptive spectral separation is used to develop a two-layer coding scheme comprising a high priority layer to carry essential video data and a low priority layer with data to enhance the video image. A two-step er...

Recognition of Visual Events using Spatio-Temporal Information of the Video Signal

Recognition of visual events as a video analysis task has become popular in machine learning community. While the traditional approaches for detection of video events have been used for a long time, the recently evolved deep learning based methods have revolutionized this area. They have enabled event recognition systems to achieve detection rates which were not reachable by traditional approac...

A coordinated multiple description scalar quantizer and error concealment algorithm for error resilient video streaming over lossy channels

Historically, multiple description coding (MDC) and post-processing error concealment (ECN) algorithms for video have evolved separately. Although multiple description coding provides a way to make the video quality degrade gracefully in the presence of packet losses, the resulting quality may be unsatisfactory when only one description is used to reconstruct the signal. This paper proposes a c...
