Humic acid from Shilajit – a physico-chemical and spectroscopic characterization

چکیده
Shilajit is a blackish–brown exudation, consisting of organic substances, metal ions and minerals, from different formations, commonly found in the Himalayan region (1000–3000 m) from Nepal to Kashmir. Shilajit can also b e collected t hroughout the mountain region s i n Afghani stan, Bhutan, China, Bajkal, throughout Ural, Cauc asus and Altai mountains also, at altitudes be tween 1 000 to 5000 m. The major phy siological acti on of shilaj it has be en attributed to t he presence of b ioactive dibenzo-α-pyrones together with humic and fulvic acid s, which act as carrier molecu les for the active ingredient s. In this work, the aim was to extract humic acid from Shilajit from various sources and characterised these humic acids based on their physicochemical properties, elemental analysis, UV/Vis and FTIR spectra, X-ray diffraction pattern and DSC thermograms. The spectral fea tures obtaine d fro m UV/Vi s, FTIR, XRD an d DSC studies for sa mples of different origins sh owed a distinct similarity amongst the mselves and i n c omparison to soil hu mic acids. The surfacta nt properties of th e extract ed ful vic acid s were investigated by deter mining th e effect of increa sing c oncentration on the surf ace ten sion of water. The stu dy demonstrated t hat hu mic a cids extra cted from shilajit inde ed po ssessed surfactant properties.

Chemistry of shilajit, an immunomodulatory Ayurvedic rasayan
The chemical polemics in the reported literature on shilajit are resolved. This study shows that humification of latex and resin-bearing plants is responsible for the major organic mass (80-85%) of shilajit. The low mol. w t . chemical markers (&lo%) , viz. aucuparins, oxygenated dibenzo-K -pyrones and triterpenic acids of the tirucallane type (free and conjugated), occurring in the core struct...
متن کاملComplement-fixing activity of fulvic acid from Shilajit and other natural sources.
Shilajit has been used traditionally in folk medicine for the treatment of a variety of disorders, including syndromes involving excessive complement activation. Extracts of Shilajit contain significant amounts of fulvic acid (FA), and it has been suggested that FA is responsible for many therapeutic properties of Shilajit. However, little is known regarding the physical and chemical properties...
متن کاملPolyamide Forward Osmosis Membrane: Synthesis, Characterization and Its Performance for Humic Acid Removal
In this research, modification on the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane by synthesis of a thin layer of polyamide selective layer was designed for high performances of forward osmosis (FO) water treatment. Two monomers, m-Phenylenediamine (MPD) and Trimesoyl chloride (TMC) with different concentrations of MPD (2.0% w/v and 1.0% w/v) were reacted with TMC (0.15% w/v) for interfacial polymerization (...
متن کاملPotential of OM of Iranian peat and swamp and characterization of physico-chemical properties of organic soils
The objective of this work was to investigate the potential of three different kinds of Iranian peat and swamp soils as sources of organic matter (OM) in the Golestan Province, Northern Iran. Comparison of the peats was done in terms of the degree of humification on the von Post scale. Moreover, the X-ray fluorescence, X-Ray Diffractometry, and Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) techniques wer...
متن کاملIncreased retention of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils induced by soil treatment with humic substances.
The analytical recovery of a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was determined from a soil before and after oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, and subsequently treated with increasing amounts of an exogenous humic acid and subjected to different incubation periods. The release of PAHs from soil depended on the specific structure and physico-chemical properties of each PAH, and in...
