Kalman Filtering over Gilbert-Elliott Channels: Stability Conditions and the Critical Curve
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper investigates the stability of Kalman filtering over Gilbert-Elliott channels where random packet drop follows a time-homogeneous two-state Markov chain whose state transition is determined by a pair of failure and recovery rates. First of all, we establish a relaxed condition guaranteeing peak-covariance stability described by an inequality in terms of the spectral radius of the system matrix and transition probabilities of the Markov chain. We further show that that condition can be interpreted using a linear matrix inequality feasibility problem. Next, we prove that the peak-covariance stability implies mean-square stability, if the system matrix has no defective eigenvalues on the unit circle. This connection between the two stability notions holds for any random packet drop process. We prove that there exists a critical curve in the failure-recovery rate plane, below which the Kalman filter is mean-square stable and no longer mean-square stable above, via a coupling method in stochastic processes. Finally, a lower bound for this critical failure rate is obtained making use of the relationship we establish between the two stability criteria, based on an approximate relaxation of the system matrix.

Kalman Filtering in Correlated Losses
In this project we consider the problem of estimating the state of an unstable system in presence of correlated losses using a Kalman Filter . This scenario arises in performing vehicle tracking or navigation over a wireless channel. Since wireless channels are inherently lossy in nature, it is possible for the Kalman estimator to lose some observations. We study the behavior of Kalman filter i...
متن کاملKalman Filtering over Fading Channels: Zero-One Laws and Almost Sure Stabilities
In this paper, we investigate probabilistic stability of Kalman filtering over fading channels modeled by ∗-mixing random processes, where channel fading is allowed to generate nonstationary packet dropouts with temporal and/or spatial correlations. Upper/lower almost sure (a.s.) stabilities and absolutely upper/lower a.s. stabilities are defined for characterizing the sample-path behaviors of ...
متن کاملOn Kalman filtering over fading wireless channels with controlled transmission powers
We study stochastic stability of centralized Kalman filtering for linear time-varying systems equipped with wireless sensors. Transmission is over fading channels where variable channel gains are counteracted by power control to alleviate the effects of packet drops. We establish sufficient conditions for the expected value of the Kalman filter covariance matrix to be exponentially bounded in n...
متن کاملKalman Filtering over Wireless Fading Channels
In this chapter, we consider the estimation of a dynamical system over a wireless fading channel using a Kalman filter. We develop a framework for understanding the impact of stochastic communication noise, packet drop and the knowledge available on the link qualities on Kalman filtering over fading channels. We consider three cases of “full knowledge”, “no knowledge” and “partial knowledge”, b...

We study stochastic stability for Kalman filtering over fading wireless channels where variable channel gains are counteracted by the use of power control to alleviate the effects of packet drops. The Kalman filter and the controller are located at a single gateway which acquires data from the wireless sensors. We establish sufficient conditions which ensure that the Kalman filter covariance ma...
