چکیده

The inelastic scattering of x-rays, one of the the first applications of x-rays to the field of condensed matter physics, has been rejuvenated in the last decade. The availability of synchrotrons radiation from wiggler and undulator sources combined with advances in monochromatization of the incident beam and analysis of the scattered beam with meV resolution led to the measurement of phonon dispersion relations. In addition, the use of Mossbauer nuclei as scatterer and analyzers has led to the discovery of the inelastic nuclear resonant scattering technique. This new method ailows extraction of partial phonon density of states from amorphous materials, thin films, multilayers and interfaces, and liquids.

Lattice dynamics of MgO at high pressure: theory and experiment.

The longitudinal acoustic and optical phonon branches along the Gamma-X direction of MgO at 35 GPa have been determined by inelastic x-ray scattering using synchrotron radiation and a diamond-anvil cell. The experimentally observed phonon branches are in remarkable agreement with ab initio lattice dynamics results. The derived thermodynamic properties, such as the specific heat CV and the entro...

Introduction to the theory of lattice dynamics

We review the theory of lattice dynamics, starting from a simple model with two atoms in the unit cell and generalising to the standard formalism used by the scientific community today. The key component of the theory is the force between atoms, and we discuss how this can be computed from empirical or quantum mechanical models. The basic model is developed to link the amplitudes of vibrations ...

Outrunning damage: Electrons vs X-rays—timescales and mechanisms

Toward the end of his career, Zewail developed strong interest in fast electron spectroscopy and imaging, a field to which he made important contributions toward his aim of making molecular movies free of radiation damage. We therefore compare here the atomistic mechanisms leading to destruction of protein samples in diffract-and-destroy experiments for the cases of high-energy electron beam ir...

On the nonthermal emission in active galactic nuclei

We consider the role of centrifugal force on the energetics of electrons moving along the magnetic field lines of spinning active galactic nuclei. We find the energy gained by charged particles against inverse Compton scattering and/ synchrotron radiation losses, become quite significant in the region close to the light cylinder. The particles accelerated by the centrifugal force become a part ...

Role of inelastic electron–phonon scattering in electron transport through ultra-scaled amorphous phase change material nanostructures

The electron transport through ultra-scaled amorphous phase change material (PCM) GeTe is investigated by using ab initio molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and non-equilibrium Green’s function, and the inelastic electron–phonon scattering is accounted for by using the Born approximation. It is shown that, in ultra-scaled PCM device with 6 nm channel length, <4 % of the energy carri...
