Behavioral and neural analyses of connotative meaning: word classes and rating scales.

چکیده
Behavioral (semantic differential) and neural (Evoked Potentials, EPs) responses were related to connotative meaning. The approach was based on Osgood’s semantic analyses and dimensions of Evaluation (E), Potency (P), and Activity (A). The experimental variables were (I) the semantic class of the stimulus word (E+, E, P+ , P-, A+, A-) and (2) the dimension of the semantic scale (E, P. A) which the subject used to rate the stimulus words. These variables were experimentally combined such that on each trial the subject used a designated semantic scale to judge a specified stimulus word while brain activity was recorded. Using multivariate analyses, the effects on the EPs of stimulus word class, scale dimension, and their interaction were analyzed. The EP effects of stimulus word class were similar whether the subjects were merely saying the words or rating the words on a variety of semantic scales. Different EPs were found for six word classes, three semantic scale dimensions, and the I8 groups formed by their combination. The success rates in EP identification of (I) word class and (2) scale dimension did not depend on whether these two kinds of semantic variables involved the same or different semantic dimensions. The two kinds of semantic effects in EPs were largely independent. The behavioral data supported Osgood’s results and showed that our subjects were appropriately processing the semantic information. The common analyses of data from all subjects suggest the universality of the connotative EP effects across individuals. This parallels, at the neural level, the universality of the connotative dimensions found at the behavioral level by semantic differential ratings. The EP effects imply that the neural representation of meaning is similar in different individuals.

A Contrastive Study of the Connotative Meaning of Linguistic Signs in English and Chinese
According to G. Leech’s classification of meaning, the denotative meaning of a word is different from its connotative one. The denotation of a linguistic sign may be the same in different languages, but their connotations may be quite different. The paper makes a contrastive analysis of the connotative meaning of linguistic signs in English and Chinese, such as Color terms, Kinship terms, Anima...
متن کاملTraditional and emotional stylometric analysis of the songs of Beatles Paul McCartney and John Lennon
Traditional stylometric measures such as word usage, word length, and word repetition were paired with six new measures that described word emotionality in terms of a word's pleasantness, its activation level, and the combination of these factors. All measurements were applied to the songs composed by Beatles Paul McCartney and John Lennon between 1962 and 1970. Stylistic and emotional differen...
متن کاملConnotative Interpretations of Sexuality - Related Terms
The relationship between a word and its possible meanings is known as semantics (Megginson, 1996). Depending on context, this relationship may add complexity to interpersonal communication. The very mention of particular words can produce two types of meaning: denotative, or referential, and connotative, or representational. A person may be able to give the denotative meaning (i.e., dictionary ...
متن کاملDeveloping Rating Scale Descriptors for Assessing the Stages of Writing Process: The Constructs Underlying Students' Writing Performances
The purpose of the present study is to develop appropriate scoring scales for each of the defined stages of the writing process, and also to determine to what extent these scoring scales can reliably and validly assess the performances of EFL learners in an academic writing task. Two hundred and two students’ writing samples were collected after a step-by-step process oriented essay writing ins...
متن کاملTowards a Cognitive Approach for the Automated Detection of Connotative Meaning
The goal of the research described here is to automate the recognition of connotative meaning in text using a range of linguistic and non-linguistic features. Pilot results are used to illustrate the potential of an integrated multidisciplinary approach to semantic text analysis that combines cognitiveoriented human subject experimentation with Machine Learning (ML) based Natural Language Proce...
