چکیده
DENSITY: software for analysing capture–recapture data from passive detector arrays.— A general computer–intensive method is described for fitting spatial detection functions to capture–recapture data from arrays of passive detectors such as live traps and mist nets. The method is used to estimate the population density of 10 species of breeding birds sampled by mist–netting in deciduous forest at Patuxent Research Refuge, Laurel, Maryland, U.S.A., from 1961 to 1972. Total density (9.9 ± 0.6 ha–1 mean ± SE) appeared to decline over time (slope –0.41 ± 0.15 ha–1y–1). The mean precision of annual estimates for all 10 species pooled was acceptable ( = 14%). Spatial analysis of closed–population capture– recapture data highlighted deficiencies in non–spatial methodologies. For example, effective trapping area cannot be assumed constant when detection probability is variable. Simulation may be used to evaluate alternative designs for mist net arrays where density estimation is a study goal.

A comparison of linear transect and capture recapture methods results in Iranian Jerboa population density and abundance estimation in Mirabad plains, Shahreza
During a period from spring 2008 till fall 2010, Iranian Jerboa population abundance was estimated using distance (linear transect) and capture-recapture methods in the Mirabad plains near Shahreza city in Isfahan Province. In the study period, during the active time of the species except reproduction time, we tried to live-trap, mark, release and recapture individuals based on Schnabel method ...
متن کاملHow Does Spatial Study Design Influence Density Estimates from Spatial Capture-Recapture Models?
When estimating population density from data collected on non-invasive detector arrays, recently developed spatial capture-recapture (SCR) models present an advance over non-spatial models by accounting for individual movement. While these models should be more robust to changes in trapping designs, they have not been well tested. Here we investigate how the spatial arrangement and size of the ...
متن کاملEstimating minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) boing sound density using passive acoustic sensors
Density estimation for marine mammal species is performed primarily using visual distance sampling or capture-recapture. Minke whales in Hawaiian waters are very difficult to sight; however, they produce a distinctive “boing” call, making them ideal candidates for passive acoustic density estimation. We used an array of 14 bottom-mounted hydrophones, distributed over a 60 × 30 km area off Kauai...

متن کاملEstimation of population density by spatially explicit capture-recapture analysis of data from area searches.
The recent development of capture-recapture methods for estimating animal population density has focused on passive detection using devices such as traps or automatic cameras. Some species lend themselves more to active searching: a polygonal plot may be searched repeatedly and the locations of detected individuals recorded, or a plot may be searched just once and multiple cues (feces or other ...
