چکیده

Hypertension is common in the elderly. While it is possible to reduce blood pressure in this age group, the value of such treatment in terms of reduced mortality and morbidity is unknown. The effects of a prescribed regimen depends inter alia on compliance. Therefore, this variable must be taken into account in assessing drug treatment in the elderly hypertensive. In general, the elderly comply well with drug treatment but there are a number of well defined problems in this age group.

Treated hypertensives with good medication compliance are still in a state of uncontrolled blood pressure in the Japanese elderly.

OBJECTIVES Blood pressure (BP) is poorly controlled in many countries. Poor compliance was suggested as the main cause for poor BP control. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between compliance and the control of both casual blood pressure (BP) and 24-hr ambulatory BP in a Japanese elderly population. METHODS The study was a cross-sectional survey. Casual BP and 24-hr am...

Is a systolic blood pressure target <140 mmHg indicated in all hypertensives? Subgroup analyses of findings from the randomized FEVER trial.

AIMS Major guidelines recommend lowering systolic blood pressure (SBP) to <140 mmHg in all hypertensives, but evidence is missing whether this is beneficial in (i) uncomplicated hypertensives, (ii) grade 1 hypertensives, and (iii) elderly hypertensives. Providing this missing evidence is important to justify efforts and costs of aggressive therapy in all hypertensives. METHODS AND RESULTS Fel...

Arterial vasodilatory and ventricular diastolic reserves determine the stroke volume response to exercise in elderly female hypertensive patients.

Elderly female hypertensives with arterial stiffening constitute a majority of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), a condition characterized by inability to increase cardiac stroke volume (SV) with physical exercise. As SV is determined by the interaction between the left ventricle (LV) and its load, we wished to study the role of arterial hemodynamics for exer...

Baroreflex function in elderly hypertensives.

Baroreflex function was assessed in elderly hypertensive patients and compared with that observed in young hypertensives and young normotensives. Mean arterial pressure was reduced by 20% using intravenous nitroprusside infusion in 10 elderly hypertensive patients (older than 65 years and diastolic pressures over 95 mm Hg), in 10 young hypertensives (under 60 years and diastolic pressures over ...

Elderly hypertensives show decreased cognitive performance compared with elderly normotensives.

BACKGROUND Essential hypertension has been associated with decreased cognitive performance; however, the literature is conflicting. OBJECTIVE This study aims at comparing cognitive performance between elderly normotensives ("N"; n = 17; age 68 ± 1; blood pressure = 133 ± 3/74 ±2 mmHg) and hypertensives ("H"; n = 28; age 69 ± 1, blood pressure = 148 ± 4/80 ± 1mmHg) with at least 5 years of edu...
