Numerical Study of Quantum Resonances in Chaotic Scattering

چکیده
This paper presents numerical evidence that for quantum systems with chaotic classical dynamics, the number of scattering resonances near an energy E scales like h D(KE)+1 2 as h ! 0. Here, KE denotes the subset of the classical energy surface fH = Eg which stays bounded for all time under the flow generated by the Hamiltonian H and D (KE) denotes its fractal dimension. Since the number of bound states in a quantum system with n degrees of freedom scales like h n, this suggests that the quantity D(KE)+1 2 represents the effective number of degrees of freedom in chaotic scattering problems.

Quantum Resonances in Chaotic Scattering
This letter summarizes numerical results from [1] which show that in quantum systems with chaotic classical dynamics, the number of scattering resonances near an energy E scales like h̄− D(KE)+1 2 . Here, KE denotes the subset of the classical energy surface {H = E} which stays bounded for all time under the flow of H and D (KE) denotes its fractal dimension. Since the number of bound states in ...

We investigate the transport fluctuations in both non-relativistic quantum dots and graphene quantum dots with both hyperbolic and nonhyperbolic chaotic scattering dynamics in the classical limit. We find that nonhyperbolic dots generate sharper resonances than those in the hyperbolic case. Strikingly, for the graphene dots, the resonances tend to be much sharper. This means that transmission o...
متن کامل0 Scattering from Spatially Localized Chaotic and Disordered Systems
A version of scattering theory that was developed many years ago to treat nuclear scattering processes, has provided a powerful tool to study universality in scattering processes involving open quantum systems with underlying classically chaotic dynamics. Recently, it has been used to make random matrix theory predictions concerning the statistical properties of scattering resonances in mesosco...
متن کاملChaotic scattering on graphs
Quantized, compact graphs are excellent paradigms for quantum chaos in bounded systems. Connecting them with leads to infinity, we show that they display all the features which characterize quantum chaotic scattering. We derive exact expressions for the scattering matrix, and an exact trace formula for the density of resonances, in terms of classical orbits, analogous to the semiclassical theor...
متن کاملQuantum Resonances and Decay of a Chaotic Fractal Repeller Observed Using Microwaves
The quantum resonances of classically chaotic n-disk geometries were studied experimentally utilizing thin 2D microwave geometries. The experiments yield the frequencies and widths of lowlying resonances, which are compared with semiclassical calculations. The long time or small energy behavior of the wave-vector autocorrelation gives information about the quantum decay rate, which is in good a...
