چکیده

A complexity analysis of discrete multitone (DMT) and single-carrier modulation (SCM) in the context of a very high-speed digital subscriber line (VDSL) is presented in this paper. In addition to the traditional arithmetic complexity measures such as the number of multiply-and-accumulate (MAC) operations, we also compute the memory requirements. Furthermore, we normalize these metrics with respect to the number of information bits transmitted (rate normalized) and scale with respect to data path precision (precision scaled) in order to obtain more comprehensive metrics. The analysis shows that the number of MAC’s per transmitted information bit ( MACb) for SCM is greater than that for DMT for all distances of interest in VDSL. The number of MACs per information bit and scaled with respect to precision ( MAC), i.e., MACb = MACb MAC, was found to be clearly smaller for SCM in loops shorter than approximately 2 kft. This metric was found to be clearly smaller for DMT in loops longer than approximately 3.25 kft. At all lengths, DMT was found to have smaller memory requirements per information bit, as well as smaller precision-scaled memory requirements.

Filter Bank – Based Multicarrier Modulation

Even though we do have on going research on traditional OFDM/DMT techniques, part of our research in multicarrier communication concentrates on filter bank-based multicarrier modulation. We refer to this as cosine-modulated filter bank multicarrier modulation (CMFB-MCM) or cosine-modulated multitone (CMT), for a shorter terminology. In the past, under the name discrete wavelet multitone (DWMT) ...

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing and Multicarrier Communications: An Overview, Issues and Knowledge Gaps

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a form of multicarrier transmission, in which a high-rate data stream is transmitted in a parallel manner over a number of low-rate orthogonal subcarriers. Thanks to advances in VLSI technology, high-speed, high-order FFT/IFFT chips which implement OFDM modulation have become commercially viable, thus making OFDM a candidate for many commerci...

Adaptive RFI Cancellation in VDSL Systems

Radio frequency interference (RFI) greatly increases the difficulty of channel equalization in a single-carrier based very-high-speed digital subscriber line (VDSL) system. This paper investigates digital complex-coefficient adaptive notch filter (ANF) algorithms to cancel the RFI. The goal of this paper is to propose a base-band RFI cancellation technique employing digital complex ANF and anal...

Novel efficient bit-loading algorithms for peak-energy-limited ADSL-type multicarrier systems

In this paper, we develop solutions for the loading of digital subscriber loop (DSL) multicarrier (MC) systems that present constraints both on overall available energy and maximum energy per carrier. In the emerging G.DMT-based systems planned for high-throughput multimedia applications, the constraint on the peak-energy arises from spectral compatibility issues. However, until today, optimal ...

Implementation of a Wireless Multi-Carrier Acoustic Modem using Error Control Coding

In Digital Communication Systems, especially high-speed modems, it is desirable to increase the bit rate while maintaining the same bandwidth without seriously impairing transmission quality. Single-Carrier systems provide a decent bit rate, but Multi-Carrier systems give bit rates that are several orders higher. Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) services and Orthogonal Frequency Divisi...
