Mass Transport Phenomena in a MCFC Cathode

چکیده
A molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) is an electro-chemical energy conversion technology that runs on natural gas and employs a molten salt electrolyte. In order to keep the electrolyte in this state, the cell must be kept at a temperature above 500◦C, eliminating the need for precious metals as the catalyst. There has been only a limited amount of research on modelling the transport processes inside this device, mainly due to its restricted applicability for mobile applications. In this work, three one-dimensional models of a MCFC cathode are presented based on different types of diffusion and convection. Comparisons between models are performed so as to assess their validity. Regarding ion transport, it is shown that there exists a limiting case for ion migration across the cathode that depends on the conductivity for the liquid potential. Finally, an optimization of the diffusivity across the cathode is carried out in an attempt to increase the cell performance and its longevity.

Three-dimensional modeling of transport phenomena in a planar anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell
In this article three dimensional modeling of a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) was investigated. The main objective was to attain the optimized cell operation. SOFC operation simulation involves a large number of parameters, complicated equations, (mostly partial differential equations), and a sophisticated simulation technique; hence, a finite element method (FEM) multiphysics approach ...

A one dimensional isothermal mathematical modeling of cathode side of a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell is developed for the water management problem. Water transport is investigated in both cathode Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) and membrane through solving appropriate equations for fluid flow and mass transport in GDL and water transport within the membrane. The gaseous mixture flowing in...

A theoretical model for the molten carbonate fuel cell was developed based on the three-phase homogeneous approach. Using this model, the contribution of different cell components to losses in cell performance has been studied. In general, at low current densities, the electrolyte matrix contributed to the major fraction of potential losses. Mass transfer effects became important at high curren...
متن کاملAnalysis of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell Performance Using a Three-Phase Homogeneous Model
In this study a three-phase homogeneous model was developed to simulate the performance of the molten carbonate fuel cell ~MCFC! cathode. The homogeneous model is based on volume averaging of different variables in the three phases over a small volume element. This approach can be used to model porous electrodes as it represents the real system much better than the conventional agglomerate mode...
متن کاملDynamic Simulation of Fuel Cell Systems
The development of dynamic simulation tools for fuel cell systems and fuel cell/gas turbine (FC/GT) systems is required to understand the response of fuel cell systems to both scheduled and unscheduled perturbations. These tools supply the foundation on which control strategies can be developed and tested before they are actually implemented in a physical system. For high temperature fuel cell ...
