Martin, William J. (College of Medicine, University of Utah, Salt Lake City), and Stanley Marcus. Relation of pyrogenic and emetic properties of enterobacteriaceal endotoxin and of staphylococcal enterotoxin. J. Bacteriol. 87:1019-1026. 1964.-The pyrogenic, endotoxic fraction of enterobacteriaceal organisms, isolated in a relatively impure or purified state, is both pyrogenic in rabbits and cats as well as emeticogenic in cats in microgram amounts. Employing classical methods for preparation of enterobacteriaceal endotoxin from known enterotoxic strains of Staphylococcus aureus yielded preparations with less than one-hundredth the activity of the enterobacteriaceal material. However, a purified enterotoxin material from an S. aureus strain, with protein-like rather than polysaccharidelike properties, was found to be both pyrogenic and emeticogenic in microgram amounts. These results suggest the probability that the enterobacteriaceal pyrogenemetic substance(s) is a significant part of the whole cell, whereas the staphylococcal enterotoxin is elaborated as a metabolic product which apparently does not accumulate in the whole cell.

Pyrogenic specificity of streptococcal exotoxins, staphylococcal enterotoxin, and gram-negative endotoxin.
Streptococcal exotoxin and staphylococcal enterotoxin share several biological properties, including pyrogenicity, lymphocyte mitogenicity, and enhancement of gram-negative endotoxin lethality. These analogies of the toxins prompted comparative pyrogenic studies. When American Dutch rabbits were immunized by repeated intravenous injections of small amounts of staphylococcal enterotoxin, they ex...

Comparisons of recently published primary sequences of staphylococcal and streptococcal pyrogenic toxins prompted an evaluation of biological and immunological properties of the C terminus of staphylococcal enterotoxin C1. The 59 N-terminal amino acids were deleted from the toxin by digestion with trypsin. The resulting fragment (Mr, 20,659) contained the remaining 180 C-terminal residues. This...
متن کاملPyrogenic responses to staphylococcal enterotoxins A and B in cats.
Pyrogenic responses, ranging up to 4.8 F, were induced in cats by oral administration of highly purified staphylococcal enterotoxin B in doses from 10 to 100 mug/kg. Fever was a more sensitive indicator of intoxication than was emesis. Highly purified preparations of enterotoxin A, whether administered intravenously (0.01 to 1.0 mug/kg), orally (10 to 25 mug/kg), or into the cerebral ventricles...
متن کاملIdentification and characterization of staphylococcal enterotoxin types G and I from Staphylococcus aureus.
Staphylococcal enterotoxins are exotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus that possess emetic and superantigenic properties. Prior to this research there were six characterized enterotoxins, staphylococcal enterotoxin types A to E and H (referred to as SEA to SEE and SEH). Two new staphylococcal enterotoxin genes have been identified and designated seg and sei (staphylococcal enterotoxin type...
متن کاملEffect of formaldehyde on the immunochemical and biological activity of staphylococcal enterotoxin B.
Staphylococcal enterotoxin B was treated with 0.15 or 0.3% formaldehyde at 37 C and pH 7.3. As early as 8 hr after addition of HCHO, the toxin was unable to precipitate as much antibody from antiserum as untreated toxin; greater amounts of treated toxin were required to reach equivalence and to inhibit precipitation. With increasing time, its reactivity decreased so that at 32 weeks it could pr...
