The Impact of Regional Anesthesia on Perioperative Outcomes
نویسنده
چکیده
The Patient Superior analgesia: Numerous studies and case reports1-8 have demonstrated that, when compared to general anesthesia with volatile agents (GAVA) and intravenous opioids for postoperative analgesia, the application of regional anesthetic based techniques resulted in significantly lower pain scores both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Improved and/ or complete analgesia translates to a whole host of secondary benefits for the patient (see below).

Perioperative regional anaesthesia and postoperative longer-term outcomes
Regional anaesthesia provides effective anaesthesia and analgesia in the perioperative setting. Central neuraxial blocks-that is, spinal and epidural blocks-are well established as an alternative or adjunct to general anaesthesia. Peripheral blocks may be used as part of multimodal anaesthesia/analgesia in perioperative practice, reducing the need for opioid analgesics and enhancing early recov...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Despite some controversy regarding the strength of the available data, the use of regional anesthesia and analgesia does provide improvement in patient outcomes. Although the majority of available data have examined the effect of epidural anesthesia and analgesia on patient outcomes, an increasing number of studies recently have investigated the effect of peripheral regional t...
متن کاملSleep apnea and total joint arthroplasty under various types of anesthesia: a population-based study of perioperative outcomes.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The presence of sleep apnea (SA) among surgical patients has been associated with significantly increased risk of perioperative complications. Although regional anesthesia has been suggested as a means to reduce complication rates among SA patients undergoing surgery, no data are available to support this association. We studied the association of the type of anesthesi...
متن کاملAnesthetic Implications of Chronic Lung Disease in Patients Undergoing Transcatheter Valve Implantation.
ONE QUARTER OF patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) have evidence of chronic lung disease (CLD), obstructive or mixed. CLD is recognized as a major risk factor for perioperative morbidity and mortality. Specifically, the presence of CLD is a risk factor for postoperative pulmonary complications and an independent predictor of 1-year mortality related to cardiovascu...
