چکیده

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess skeletal stability after mandibular setback surgery with and without an inter-maxillary fixation (IMF) screw. Subjects and Methods: The subjects consisted of 40 patients with mandibular prognathism. The subjects underwent sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) with titanium plate fixation and were divided into two groups, one with and one without an IMF screw. A lateral cephalogram was done preoperatively, immediately after surgery, and 1 month, 3 months and 6 months postoperatively. The two groups were then compared statistically. Results: In the comparison of the time-course change between the two groups with repeated measure ANOVA, there were significant differences in occlusal plane (between subjects, F=2.517; df=4; P=0.0437) and convexity (between subjects, F=4.048; df=4; P=0.0038). However, there was no significant difference in the other measurements. Conclusion: This study suggested that in most measurements, there was no significant difference between two groups with and without IMF screw in time-course skeletal change. However, use of IMF screw was helpful for orthognathic surgery as a rigid anchor of IMF.

Complications Associated with Intra Oral Cortical Bone Fixation Screws for Intermaxillary Fixation in Closed Reduction of Mandibular Fractures

The objects of this study were to determine the rate of complications associated with Intra Cortical Bone Fixation Screws for Inter-maxillary fixation (IMF) and as a possible alternative to Arch-Bars in patients with un-displaced mandibular fractures. A descriptive case series study involving 25 adult patients (age range: 16-60 years) and requiring intra cortical bone fixation screws IMF was co...

Computer-assisted preoperative simulation for positioning and fixation of plate in 2-stage procedure combining maxillary advancement by distraction technique and mandibular setback surgery

INTRODUCTION Computer-assisted preoperative simulation surgery is employed to plan and interact with the 3D images during the orthognathic procedure. It is useful for positioning and fixation of maxilla by a plate. We report a case of maxillary retrusion by a bilateral cleft lip and palate, in which a 2-stage orthognathic procedure (maxillary advancement by distraction technique and mandibular ...

Changes in the Gonial Angle Following Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy and Vertical Ramus Osteotomy for Mandibular Excess

AIM The gonial angle plays an important role in ensuring a harmonious facial profile. Changes in this angle after surgery may be an esthetic concern for both the patient and the surgeon. The aim of the present study was to evaluate gonial angle changes after mandibular setback by the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) and vertical ramus osteotomy (VRO) techniques. METHODS Fifty-eight m...

Stability of bimaxillary surgery on Class III malocclusion treatment

Objective: To evaluate the stability of bimaxillary surgery in patients with skeletal malocclusion, with the use of rigid internal fixation. Methods: Lateral cephalograms from 20 patients, 11 males and 9 females, mean age of 26 years and 1 month, were evaluated before surgery, immediately post-operative and at least 6 months after surgery. Nineteen cephalometric measurements were evaluated, and...
