Effectiveness of sodium hypochlorite in preventing inoculation of periapical tissues with contaminated patency files.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI) in preventing inoculation of periapical tissues with contaminated patency files. Twenty-eight extracted human permanent teeth with single canals were used in the study. Group I teeth were filled with NaOCl, and #15 stainless steel files contaminated with Streptococcus sanguis (ATCC #10556) were allowed t...

Anatomy of sodium hypochlorite accidents.

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in various concentrations is the most widely used endodontic irrigant, but it can be an irritant to vital tissues. There are several reports about the complications of irrigation with NaOCl during root canal therapy. Most of the complications are the result of accidental extrusion of the solution from the apical foramen or accessory canals or perforations into the pe...

In vitro study of the effect of sodium hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde on substrate adherence capacity of macrophages.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vitro effect of two irrigation solutions used in endodontics (5.25% sodium hypochlorite and 1% glutaraldehyde) on substrate adherence capacity of macrophages to determine if these substances can alter macrophage function. Inflammatory macrophages were obtained from Wistar rats and resuspended in RPMI-1640 medium. Substrate adherence capacity a...

Clinical efficacy of treatment procedures in endodontic infection control and one year follow-up of periapical healing.

The objective was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of chemomechanical preparation of the root canals with sodium hypochlorite and interappointment medication with calcium hydroxide in the control of root canal infection and healing of periapical lesions. Fifty teeth diagnosed with chronic apical periodontitis were randomly allocated to one of three treatments: Single visit (SV group, n = 20), ...
