چکیده

A new acoustic transmitter for monitoring the tailbeat frequency of free-swimming ®shes and sharks is described. The transmitter is externally mounted on the ®sh's caudal peduncle and produces an acoustic pulse with every lateral movement of the tail. Field tests on obligate-swimming juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) show these transmitters accurately telemeter tailbeat de ̄ections from free-swimming sharks. Tests in a ̄ume show sharks with transmitters work harder and swim slower than sharks without transmitters, but these laboratory data can be used to correct for instrument artifacts on free-swimming sharks. A shark tracked with a tailbeat-sensing transmitter exhibited similar movement and activity patterns to shark pups tracked with smaller, orally inserted internal transmitters. The similarity of tracks indicate that the shark equipped with the tailbeat transmitter behaved normally. Thus, this new transmitter design offers a cost-effective, minimally intrusive method for accurately measuring activity rate and energy consumption of active ®shes and sharks in the ®eld. # 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Caudal differential pressure as a predictor of swimming speed of cod (Gadus morhua).

We report the results of an experiment designed to investigate the feasibility of using differential pressure to estimate the swimming speed and metabolic rate of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). Seven cod were fitted with a miniature differential pressure sensor mounted on one side of the caudal peduncle immediately anterior to the base of the caudal fin rays. Relationships between differential pr...

Implementation of an adaptive burst DQPSK receiver over shallow water acoustic channel

In an environment such as underwater channel where placing test equipments are difficult to handle, it is much practical to have hardware simulators to examine suitably designed transceivers (transmitter/receiver). The simulators of this kind will then allow researchers to observe their intentions and carry out repetitive tests to find suitable digital coding/decoding algorithms. In this p...

Spatial variation in fast muscle function of the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss during fast-starts and sprinting.

Fish fast-starts and sprints are rapid kinematic events powered by the lateral myotomal musculature. A distinction can be made between fast-starts and sprint-swimming activity. Fast-starts are kinematic events involving rapid, asymmetrical movements. Sprints involve a series of symmetrical, high-frequency tailbeats that are kinematically similar to lower-frequency, sustained swimming. The patte...

Design of a High Range, High Efficiency Spread Spectrum Transmitter for Audio Communication Applications

This work proposes a direct sequence spread spectrum transmitter with high transmission range and efficiency for audio signals. It is shown that by choosing high process gain for spread spectrum signal the data could reach a range of 55km in the 2.4GHz ISM band. By employing a light modulation scheme, we have a relaxed SNR requirement for having a low bit error rate (BER) which translates to re...
