Autosegmental Aims in Surface Optimizing Phonology

چکیده
We develop a novel optimization approach to tone. Its grammatical component consists of the similarityand proximity-based correspondence constraint framework of Agreement by Correspondence theory (ABC). Its representational component (Q theory) decomposes segments (Q) into temporally ordered, quantized subsegments (q), which comprise unitary sets of distinctive features, including tone. ABC+Q unites phonological alternations and static lexical patterns, as illustrated with a programmatic survey of core tonal phenomena: assimilation, dissimilation, lexical tone melodies, and consonant-tone interaction. ABC+Q surmounts long-standing problems for autosegmental-era, multitiered representational approaches to tone, and unites tone and segmental phonology under the modern umbrella of correspondence theory.

How Autosegmental is Phonology?
In this paper I address the following questions: How appropriate/effective are traditional autosegmental representations? What insights do autosegmental representations help us express? Where do autosegmental representations fall short? And finally, what does this all mean for phonology? Such questions are particularly timely, as numerous scholars have abandoned both earlier assumptions of clas...
متن کاملLogic and the Generative Power of Autosegmental Phonology*
The current study examines the generative power of Autosegmental Phonology (Goldsmith, 1976, 1979, 1990) in the framework of Formal Language Theory, with which we can study the computational complexity of phonological phenomena and formalisms independent of specific theoretical frameworks in phonology. A methodology for a model-theoretic study of autosegmental phonology with monadic second-orde...
متن کاملOne-Level Phonology: Autosegmental Representations and Rules as Finite Automata
When phonological rules are regarded as declarative descriptions, it is possible to construct a model of phonology in which rules and representations are no longer distinguished and such procedural devices as rule-ordering are absent. In this paper we present a finite-state model of phonology in which automata are the descriptions and tapes (or strings) are the objects being described. This pro...
متن کامل7 Tone : Is it Different ?
Except for a brief period in the late 1970s and early 1980s, tone has generally fallen outside the central concerns of theoretical phonology. During that period, the concepts and formalisms of Goldsmith’s (1976a, b) autosegmental approach to tone provided the model to address other aspects of non-linear phonology including vowel harmony (Clements 1976, 1981), nasal harmony (Hyman 1982), and fea...
متن کاملOptimality Theory and African Language Phonology
ACAL, held at the University of Illinois in 1989. At that time, the dominant research paradigm was autosegmental phonology, a theory which is concerned with issues in the representation of distinctive features (Goldsmith 1976; Leben 2006). Work on African language phonology was so central to the development of autosegmental phonology, that Goldsmith (1990) in his presentation felt no need to de...
