We have also seen this behaviour in other desert-soil cyanobacteria — for example, the common Microcoleus vaginatus . If it is widespread among prokaryotes, this response may be crucial for survival and dispersal in terrestrial environments, as most bacteria are not bound to the surface by phototaxis. Soil and deep subsurface bacteria that exist in stationary populations in dry soil may not only be passively transported by groundwater but may also actively follow a moving water pocket in order to exploit it.
