Dispersive Behaviors of Black Drum and Red Drum: Is Otolith Sr:Ca a Reliable Indicator of Salinity History?
نویسندگان
چکیده
We tested the hypothesis that strontium:calcium (Sr:Ca) in otoliths are reflective of environmental salinity experienced by two estuarine fishes during early life. Laboratory and field experiments were performed to examine the effects of salinity and temperature on Sr:Ca in otoliths of black drum (Pogonias cromis) and red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus). Otolith Sr:Ca of juveniles reared at four salinities (5‰, 15‰, 25‰, 35‰) differed significantly for P. cromis while no salinity effect was observed for S. ocellatus. Otolith Sr:Ca of both species were not affected by temperature (238C and 308C), suggesting that partitioning of Sr in otoliths of these taxa is constant over the temperature range examined. A field verification trial was conducted for P. cromis and a positive relationship between otolith Sr:Ca and ambient salinity was observed, even though the percent variability explained was modest. A series of Sr:Ca point measurements were taken from the core to the edge of the otoliths of wild P. cromis and S. ocellatus, and otolith Sr:Ca chronologies of both species showed conspicuous declines during the first few months of life. While Sr:Ca chronologies of both species suggest that ingress is associated with a reduction in otolith Sr:Ca, inconsistencies in laboratory and field experiments intimate that Sr uptake in the otolith may be insensitive to salinity and regulated by other factors (aqueous chemistry, ontogenetic shifts in habitat, or physiology). Results from early life history transects of otolith Sr:Ca conform to expected patterns of estuarine ingress-egress during early life and indicate that the approach may be useful for detecting large-scale habitat transitions (marine to estuarine habitats).

Use of Otolith Microanalysis to Determine Estuarine Migrations of Japanese Sea Bass Lateolabrax japonicus Distributed in Ariake Sea
Japanese sea bass Lateolabrax japonicus is a common euryhaline marine fish distributed in eastern Asian coastal waters, of which life history can be characterized by occasional or seasonal entry to freshwater habitats. Otolith microanalysis for Sr:Ca ratio by a wave-length dispersive electron microprobe was utilized to determine life history trajectory of the Japanese sea bass distributed in Ar...

We examined growth of recently settled juvenile red drum in salt marsh, seagrass, oyster reef, and on nonvegetated bottom areas in the Galveston Bay system of Texas (USA). We estimated growth using otolith microstructure from free-ranging fish collected in different habitat types and also measured growth of red drum in experimental enclosures where fish movement was restricted. Otolith growth w...
متن کاملVariability in Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ratios in water and fish otoliths across an estuarine salinity gradient
Retracing movements of euryhaline fishes using otolith chemistry analysis is a complex task, requiring detailed knowledge of the relationships between otolith and water chemistry for the target species and how these relationships change across dynamic environmental gradients in estuaries. In a controlled laboratory experiment, we quantified relationships between salinity and Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca rat...
متن کاملPopulation connectivity of red drum in the northern Gulf of Mexico
Stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotope ratios in otoliths were used to assess the degree of connectivity between early life and adult habitats of red drum Sciaenops ocellatus in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Young-of-the-year (YOY) red drum were sampled over a 3 yr period from major estuaries along the Texas coast, and otolith δ13C and δ18O were quantified to determine whether chemical t...
متن کاملEffects of variable ration levels on direct and indirect measures of growth in juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus)
Relationships between somatic growth (length and weight) and two indirect measures of growth (otolith growth, RNA/DNA ratio) were assessed for red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) under different feeding rations [0%, 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% body weight (BW)/day] for 30 days. Representative samples from each ration level were taken in 10-day intervals between Day 0 and Day 30 for evaluation of dir...
