چکیده

We investigated the current geographic distribution of species of Ameivula and Contomastix along the Brazilian coast. We also estimated population sizes and conservation status of species from both genera and recorded potential sources of habitat degradation. Fieldwork was carried out in 12 areas of restinga (coastal sandy plain) from northeastern (Rio Grande do Norte) to southern Brazil (Santa Catarina), along approximately 4,000 km of coast. We used straight-line transects to estimate population densities. The data indicated that the ranges of species do not overlap. Only the distribution of A. ocellifera overlapped to some degree with A. abaetensis. In general, restingas with intermediate and high levels of degradation had the lowest population densities. We suggest some management strategies for the conservation of coastal species of Ameivula.

Habitat structural effect on squamata fauna of the restinga ecosystem in northeastern Brazil.

In this work, we surveyed data on richness and composition of squamatan reptiles and habitat structural effect in nine areas of restinga ecosystem in the State of Bahia, northeastern Brazil. The "restinga" ecosystems are coastal sand dune habitats on the coast of Brazil. Our main hypothesis is that the Squamata fauna composition along these restinga areas would be modulated by habitat structura...

Species composition, richness and nestedness of lizard assemblages from Restinga habitats along the brazilian coast.

Habitat fragmentation is well known to adversely affect species living in the remaining, relatively isolated, habitat patches, especially for those having small range size and low density. This negative effect has been critical in coastal resting habitats. We analysed the lizard composition and richness of restinga habitats in 16 restinga habitats encompassing three Brazilian states (Rio de Jan...

Niche differences between two sympatric whiptail lizards (Cnemidophorus abaetensis and C. ocellifer, Teiidae) in the restinga habitat of northeastern Brazil.

Differences among sympatric lizard species usually result from differences in the use of three resources: space, time and food or some combination of these three. However, differences in resource utilization among sympatric species may simply reflect their specific ecological needs rather than competitive pressures. In this study, we analyzed the temporal, spatial and food niche of two congener...

Genetic diversity within the Iranian spiny-tailed lizards and predicting species distribution in climate change conditions

There are different methods to investigate the effects of climatic fluctuations on the biota, two of which, molecular phylogeography and SDM, are the most useful tools to trace the past climate induced modifications on species’ geographic distributions. In this study, seven samples were collected from the species distribution range in Iran for the purpose of measuring the genetic variation with...

Reptiles from Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Maranhão, northeastern Brazil

We are presenting a list of the reptile species from Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (LMNP), Maranhão, Brazil, obtained during 235 days of field work. The study area is located in the contact zone between three major Neotropical ecosystems: Amazonia, Caatinga, and Cerrado. The PNLM encompasses the largest dune fields in Brazil, wide shrubby areas (restingas), lakes, mangroves, and many freshw...
