Goals of early hypertext systems

چکیده
The notion of a singular document relating to other documents is ancient. Religious texts across cultures have included and attracted annotations, texts providing discussion and commentary on holy scriptures. Roman jurists referenced other legal decisions and precedents precisely, though other Roman authors only rarely referenced the authors, and less frequently the titles, of works on which they based their texts. More typically they quoted passages from memory, often introducing a slight change to show this. Later, in the 12th century schools that evolved into universities, medieval scholars developed precise and standardized reference forms. The modern footnote, distinct from annotation and citation, can be traced back to at least 1696, and the publication of “Historical and Critical Dictionary” by Pierre Bayle, an ambitious volume that sought to document all errors and omissions in existing historical reference books. By the middle of the 20th century, the practice of documents containing footnotes, as well as annotating and citing other documents, was common in most branches of academia.

Generation of Adaptive ( Hyper ) Text Explanations with anAgent
A number of generation systems have chosen hypertext as a target media and study ways of adapting its content and links to the presentation context and the particular user. Our experience with hypertext generation has shown that a user model with beliefs, goals and interests could help to improve the explanation quality. Therefore, an existing agent modelling framework is being integrated withi...
متن کاملThe Virtual Notebook System: Distributed Hypertext for Collaborative Research
We are developing the Virtual Notebook System (VNS), a prototype of an information integration and management environment for collaborative work. Our main goal is enhancing the productivity of scientific groups engaged in basic and clinical research in an academic medical center. As the name implies, the VNS is an electronic analog to the scientist’s notebook, and it functions as the repository...
متن کاملSecurity for next generation hypertext systems
This paper concerns the need for enhancing hypertext systems with security protection. We identify the elements of hypertext models which must be subject to security control. Main attention is directed toward hypertext and access control preventing the information stored from unauthorized disclosure or modification. From the class of known security models we consider the Discretionary Models, t...
متن کاملHyperPATH/O2: Integrating Hypermedia Systems with Object-Oriented Database Systems
We describe an integration of the hypermedia system HyperPATH with the object-oriented DBMS (OODBMS) O . Providing persistence to a hypertext system was the first motivation of this work. More generally, we were interested in a better understanding of the connection of hypertext systems with OODBMS. One of our goals was to define an abstract interface between HyperPATH and a variety of OODBMS’s...
متن کاملEvaluating Scrutable Adaptive Hypertext
Adaptive hypertext systems personalise documents to meet the individual’s particular preferences, knowledge and goals. There is a debate over how much control should be given to the user as well as how much transparency there should be to the inner workings of the system. Some adaptive systems make the user model available to the user. We propose transparency and control should extend beyond th...
متن کاملIn an Agent - Based Hypertext Environment
| In this work we discuss a number of issues for the design of hypertext systems in an agent-basedmodel of computation. We examine how the \traditional" fundamental concepts which are at the basis of the design of hypertexts can be re-visited under a new perspective of collaborative expert agents. The paper presents how some principles of high-level concurrent programming are applied as new met...
