چکیده

INTRODUCTION The Memokath® ureteric stent is a thermo-expandable titanium-nickel alloy.(1) Its use is not recommended in stone formers and patients with functional stenosis.(2) Unlike conventional plastic ureteric stents, it is a semi-permanent prosthesis. However, should removal be required simply flushing the stent with cold water returns it to a soft and pliable form. As these stents do not promote tissue ingrowth, removal is atraumatic. The stent should not extend beyond the ureteric orifice into the bladder as this may result in bladder irritability, reflux and associated flank pain.(3) Herein we report the unusual case of a 49-year old man who presented with urinary incontinence following insertion of a Memokath® ureteric stent three weeks prior.

Ureteroiliac Artery Fistula Caused by a Metallic Memokath Ureteral Stent in a Radiation-Induced Ureteral Stricture

Background: Memokath 051™ stents are increasingly used for management of benign and malignant ureteral strictures refractory to management with single or tandem polymeric Double-J ureteral stents. Migration, encrustation, and difficulty in extraction during stent exchange are the chief problems reported so far with these thermoexpandable metallic stents. We report an unusual complication of ure...

Minimally invasive treatment of ureterovaginal fistula: A review and report of a new technique

BACKGROUND An iatrogenic ureterovaginal fistula (UVF) can be a consequence of difficult pelvic surgery. The patient must endure a long wait before having major surgery to reconstruct the injured ureter. Reports that address the minimally invasive treatment of UVF are limited, and are reviewed here. We introduce the concept of using a Memokath™ 051 stent (PNN A/S, Hornbaek, Denmark) as a promisi...

A novel thermo-expandable ureteral metal stent for the minimally invasive management of ureteral strictures.

PURPOSE We assess the safety, efficacy, and cost of the novel long-term indwelling thermo-expandable Memokath ureteral stent for the management of malignant and benign ureteral strictures. MATERIALS AND METHODS Since October 2004, we treated 73 patients (34 men), ages 23 to 84 years (mean 57.7) with 86 ureteral strictures (13 bilateral) with the Memokath 051 stent. The causes of the stricture...

Antegrade repositioning of Memokath stent in malignant ureteroileal anastomotic stricture.

Ureteric strictures are common and can be due to benign or malignant causes. Various surgical treatments can be used from minimally invasive endoscopic retrograde JJ stent insertion, balloon dilatation, ureterolithotomy, to open surgical exploration and repair. Memokath 051 stent is a metallic stent designed for long-term ureteral stenting in the management of ureteral strictures. The insertion...

Endourologic Management of an Iatrogenic Ureteral Avulsion Using a Thermoexpandable Nickel–Titanium Alloy Stent (Memokath 051)

Background: The use of ureteroscopy in the management of urolithiasis is well established. Ureteral avulsion is a rare but challenging complication of the procedure. Postureteral injury strictures are a common result of such injuries and are typically managed with reconstructive surgery or endoscopically with polymer stent. This case represents the first effective management of ureteral avulsio...
