Sustainable nutrient management for pig and cattle manure applied to annual and forage cropping

چکیده
Introduction Application of livestock manure provides nutrients for crop production and can also improve soil quality. However, the availability of nutrients in manure is difficult to predict. Therefore, livestock manure is frequently under or over-applied with respect to crop nitrogen and phosphorus requirements. In cases where the availability of nutrients is less than expected, application rates may be insufficient to meet a crop's nutritional requirements, whereas application of manure nutrients in excess of crop requirements can result in excessive accumulation of nutrients in soil and an increased risk of nutrient loss to ground or surface water. Therefore, an accurate estimate of nutrient availability from manure is required, not only to decrease fertilizer requirements and costs to producers but also to minimize risk to the environment.

The introduction of ecological sanitation (ECOSAN) toilets in villages near Bangalore hascreated opportunities for safer sanitation and recycling of human excreta, as fertilizers, in ruraland peri-urban areas. Field experiments were conducted at the University farm on French beansand Maize as the test crops in succession for 2 consecutive years in the same field. Differenttreatment combinations...
متن کاملEffect of Dehydrated Digested Effluent of Manure on Yield and Quality of Annual Forages and Soil Chemical Properties in Southern Kyushu, Japan
Digested effluent of manure (DEM) produced by biogas-plants contains many macroand micronutrients. In an experiment conducted in southern Kyushu (Japan), forage crops cultivated after receiving DEM and chemical fertilizers exhibited similar dry matter yields. From a logistical standpoint, however, DEM in liquid form is difficult to handle and apply due to the low concentration of nutrients. To ...
متن کاملDietary effects on the turnover and plant utilisation of animal manure nitrogen
Animal manure is an important source of N for crop production. Part of the manure N is bound in organic compounds and must be mineralised in the soil before it can be utilised by plants. The composition of animal manure is influenced by the diet fed to the animal. We have studied the effects of pig and dairy cattle feed composition on the turnover and potential utilisation of manure N. Dairy co...
