Numerical simulations of transportational cyclic steps

چکیده
A numerical model that couples water flow and sediment transport over a non-cohesive bed is developed to simulate the initiation and evolution of transportational cyclic steps. Transportational cyclic steps are periodic bedforms characterized by corresponding hydraulic jumps that form when a supercritical flow erodes and deposits bottom sediments on a steep bed. The flow transition at the hydraulic jump leads to bed erosion on the supercritical part and deposition on the subcritical part of the step, with consequent upstream migration while the form is preserved. The numerical scheme developed to study transportational cyclic steps utilizes an approximate Riemann solver to capture the exact location of the hydraulic jumps present in the domain. Simulations of step growth from small perturbations on an initially flat bed are carried out and partly answer the question of how transportational steps form. Results show that both an initial infinitesimal bottom perturbation and a random distribution of bottom elevations evolve in a series of steps migrating upstream. Moreover, numerical simulations clearly show that the final configuration strongly depends on initial conditions. r 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Numerical and Experimental Study on Ratcheting Behavior of Plates with Circular Cutouts under Cyclic Axial Loading
In this paper, accumulation of plastic deformation of AISI 1045 steel plates with circular cutouts under cyclic axial loading is studied. Loading was applied under force-control conditions. Experimental tests were performed using a Zwick/Roell servo hydraulic machine. Under force-control loading with nonzero mean force, plastic strain was accumulated in continuous cycles called ratcheting. Nume...
متن کاملNumerical and Experimental Study on Ratcheting Behavior of Steel Cylindrical Shells with/without Cutout Under Cyclic Combined and Axial Loading
Ratcheting behavior of steel 304L cylindrical shell under cyclic combined and axial loading are investigated in this paper, numerically. Cylindrical shells were fixed oblique at angle of 20° and normal with respect to the longitudinal direction of the shell and subjected to force-controlled cycling with non-zero mean force, which causes the accumulation of plastic deformation or ratcheting beha...
متن کاملThe legacy of initial conditions in landscape evolution
Landscapes subject to constant forcing tend to evolve toward equilibrium states in which individual landforms have similar characteristics. Yet, even in landscapes at or near equilibrium, there can be significant variability among individual landforms. Furthermore, sites subject to similar processes and conditions can have different mean landform characteristics. This variability is often ascri...
متن کاملA Strain Range Dependent Cyclic Plasticity Model
Hysteresis loop curves are highly important for numerical simulations of materials deformation under cyclic loadings. The models mainly take account of only the tensile half of the stabilized cycle in hysteresis loop for identification of the constants which don’t vary with accumulation of plastic strain and strain range of the hysteresis loop. This approach may be quite erroneous particularly ...
متن کاملCharacteristics of residential areas and transportational walking among frail and non-frail Dutch elderly: does the size of the area matter?
BACKGROUND A residential area supportive for walking may facilitate elderly to live longer independently. However, current evidence on area characteristics potentially important for walking among older persons is mixed. This study hypothesized that the importance of area characteristics for transportational walking depends on the size of the area characteristics measured, and older person's fra...
