Narrow Leaf Mutants in the Grass Family

چکیده
Leaf morphology is critical for the survival of plant species. After a leaf primordium is initiated at the flank of shoot apical meristem (SAM), the development along the medial‐ lateral direction enlarges the leaf‐blades, leading to the increase of photosynthetic activi‐ ties. Thus, the revelation of mechanisms that control development across a leaf is quite important for plant breeding. A variety of narrow leaf mutants have been identified in the grass family, which includes particularly important crops in the world. Here, the molecular mechanisms underlying the leaf development in the medial‐lateral direction are discussed as we introduce the three major groups of narrow leaf mutants in the grass family: (1) auxin‐related mutants, (2) cellulose synthase‐like D (CSLD)‐related mutants, and (3) polarity‐related mutants. The results obtained from these analyses could be directly applied to the breeding of major cereal crops such as maize, rice, and barley; therefore, they could contribute to the increase of food production.

Molecular genetic control of leaf lifespan in plants - A review
Leaf senescence constitutes the last stage of leaf development in plants and proceeds through a highly regulated program in order to redistribution of micro- and macro-nutrients from the senescing leaves to the developing/growing plant organs. Initiation and progression of leaf senescence is accompanied by massive sequential alterations at various levels of leaf biology including leaf morpholog...
متن کاملRetracted: Flavonoid-Deficient Mutants in Grass Pea (Lathyrus sativus L.): Genetic Control, Linkage Relationships, and Mapping with Aconitase and S-Nitrosoglutathione Reductase Isozyme Loci
Two flavonoid-deficient mutants, designated as fldL-1 and fldL-2, were isolated in EMS-mutagenized (0.15%, 10 h) M(2) progeny of grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.). Both the mutants contained total leaf flavonoid content only 20% of their mother varieties. Genetic analysis revealed monogenic recessive inheritance of the trait, controlled by two different nonallelic loci. The two mutants differed s...

In recent decade, establish and maintenance of turf grasses is faced with serious doubts due to reduction of precipitation and water resources. So, identification of drought-resistant native and rangeland species, and introducing them as turf grass not only is effective in reducing water consumption, but also help to preserve the genetic resources of the country. In order to evaluate the usabil...
متن کاملThe INDETERMINATE DOMAIN Protein BROAD LEAF1 Limits Barley Leaf Width by Restricting Lateral Proliferation
Variation in the size, shape, and positioning of leaves as the major photosynthetic organs strongly impacts crop yield, and optimizing these aspects is a central aim of cereal breeding [1, 2]. Leaf growth in grasses is driven by cell proliferation and cell expansion in a basal growth zone [3]. Although several factors influencing final leaf size and shape have been identified from rice and maiz...
متن کاملCharacterization of a Null Allelic Mutant of the Rice NAL1 Gene Reveals Its Role in Regulating Cell Division
Leaf morphology is closely associated with cell division. In rice, mutations in Narrow leaf 1 (NAL1) show narrow leaf phenotypes. Previous studies have shown that NAL1 plays a role in regulating vein patterning and increasing grain yield in indica cultivars, but its role in leaf growth and development remains unknown. In this report, we characterized two allelic mutants of NARROW LEAF1 (NAL1), ...
