چکیده

Coliform mastitis in sows, as part of the postpartum dysgalactia syndrome, represents an economically very important disease complex.1 In other species, for instance in cows, a higher susceptibility of the mammary gland to new infections prior to and during parturition was proposed by Oliver and Sordillo.2 Though coliform mastitis is a multifactorial disease, bacteria play an important role in the pathogenesis of infection. Possibly, pathogenic bacteria are not ubiquitous only in the environment of the animals, but are also present on the skin. The skin flora of pigs, especially on sows’ mammary glands, has not yet been the object of scientific examination. This is, to the authors’ knowledge, the first published study to determine the bacterial flora in skin and colostral milk samples of a limited number of sows with clinically healthy mammary glands. Materials and methods All animal care and handling procedures used in this study followed the farms’ written guidelines in accordance with guidelines set forth by the Federation of Animal Science Societies.3

Relationships between colostrum production by primiparous sows and sow physiology around parturition.

Relationships between hormonal and metabolic changes around parturition and colostrum yield and composition were investigated in 16 Landrace x Large White primiparous sows. Blood samples were taken daily from d 105 of pregnancy to d 2 postpartum (with d 0 being the day of parturition). Colostrum samples were taken at the onset of parturition (T0), and then 3, 6, and 24 h later (T3, T6, and T24,...

Colostrum production by sows: variability of colostrum yield and immunoglobulin G concentrations.

Colostrum provides newborn piglets with energy, immunoglobulins and growth, thereby playing an essential role in piglet survival. However, colostrum yield and composition are highly variable among sows. Some of the factors involved in this variability have been identified. The aim of the study was to confirm previous findings on a large number of animals and to investigate other potential facto...

Antioxidant defence of colostrum and milk in consecutive lactations in sows

BACKGROUND Parturition is supposed to be related to oxidative stress, not only for the mother, but also for the newborn. Moreover, it is not clear whether consecutive pregnancies, parturitions, and lactations are similar to each other in regards to intensity of metabolic processes or differ from each other. The aim of the study was to compare dynamic changes of antioxidative parameters in colos...

Year after year the genetic potential of sows rises. Litters of 20 piglets are no longer an exception. The continuous selection focus on high litter sizes puts an enormous pressure on the sows. To reap the benefits of the genetic potential, issues like milk production, pre-weaning mortality and weaning weight of piglets deserve the highest attention. Ensuring a high health status of sows is thu...
