A new method to suppress ghosting artifacts arising from long-T1 species in segmented inversion recovery (IR) sequences

چکیده
Background Bright ghosting due to long-T1 species (e.g. cerebrospinal fluid, pericardial or pleural effusion, fig. 1) often hampers the identification of infarcted myocardium on delayed enhancement CMR. The artifacts are caused by signal oscillations of the long-T1 species due to the periodic application of IR pulses. Previous methods use a dummy heartbeat (+HB, sequence run without data acquisition for leading heartbeat) or various pre-pulses (SR or IR). Both techniques may result in insufficient suppression or may be cumbersome to use. We developed a new suppression method utilizing saturation pulses (followed by “crusher” gradient pulses) after each readout (+Po) in combination with a dummy heartbeat. This method does not require user input. We tested it against four other suppression methods by quantifying the long-T1 ghosting seen in the respective images.

A Robust and Simple Technique for the Suppression of Artifacts Arising From Long T1 Species in Segmented Inversion Recovery Sequences
Introduction: Delayed enhancement imaging employing the ECG-gated segmented IR TurboFlash sequence (gradient echo) is considered the clinical gold standard for the detection of myocardial infarction. Although image contrast between infarct and viable myocardium is excellent, there is increased susceptibility towards even faint bright artifacts, since viable myocardium is depicted dark. A common...
متن کاملThe effect of inversion times on the minimum signal intensity of the contrast agent concentration using inversion recovery t1-weighted fast imaging sequence
Background :Inversion recovery (IR) pulse sequences can generate T1-weighted images with a different range of inversion time (TI) to suppress or null the signal intensity (SI) for a specified tissue. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of TI values on the concentration of the contrast agent, which leads to a minimum signal intensity, using an inversion recovery T1-weighted 3-dim...

PURPOSE To develop arrhythmia-insensitive inversion recovery sequences for improved visualization of myocardial scar and quantification of diffuse fibrosis. METHODS A novel preparation pre-pulse, called saturation pulse prepared heart-rate-independent inversion recovery, is introduced, which consists of a combination of saturation and inversion pulses to remove the magnetization history in ea...
متن کاملArtifact suppression in imaging of myocardial infarction using B1-weighted phased-array combined phase-sensitive inversion recovery.
Regions of the body with long T1, such as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), may create ghost artifacts on gadolinium-hyperenhanced images of myocardial infarction when inversion recovery (IR) sequences are used with a segmented acquisition. Oscillations in the transient approach to steady state for regions with long T1 may cause ghosts, with the number of ghosts being equal to the number of segments. ...
متن کاملFaster Inversion Recovery Prepared T1 weighted segmented turbo field echo sequence (IR-TFE): Evaluating options for eliminating the start-up shot
Introduction In conventional multi-shot IR-TFE sequences, e.g., clinical myocardial viability imaging, data collected during the first one or two shots is ignored, to minimize signal intensity variation across the shots. For a typical 8-10 heartbeat acquisition, such dummy shots results in scan overhead of 10-15% longer scan time. We evaluate the effect of removing the start-up shots in such IR...
