Bovine Leukosis Virus Update II: Impact on Immunity and Disease Resistance

چکیده

Introduction Bovine Leukosis Virus (BLV) is a retroviral infection that causes leukemia in cattle by targeting white blood cells and causing them to grow uncontrollably. Most BLV-infected cattle seldom present with outward clinical signs. Approximately 30% of infected animals, however, will have abnormally high white blood cell counts and up to 5% will develop malignant tumors or lymphosarcomas. The most severe cases of BLV will exhibit enlarged lymph nodes, weight loss, loss of appetite, infertility and decreased milk production [1, 2]. The virus is transferred from cow to cow by BLV-laden white blood cells found in blood, saliva, semen and milk.

A review of the development of chicken lines to resolve genes determining resistance to diseases.

The resolution of genes that determine resistance to disease is described using chicken lines maintained at the Avian Disease and Oncology Laboratory (ADOL). This description includes a summary 1) of existing selected and inbred lines differing for resistance to viral-induced tumors, i.e., Marek's disease (MD) and lymphoid leukosis (LL), and of the use of inbred and line crosses to define relev...

Detection and Identification of Enzootic Bovine Leukosis (EBL) in Calves in Iran

Enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) is known as bovine lymphosarcoma and normally affects the old cattle. EBL is caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV), which is generally spread all around the world. This virus is transmitted via bovine blood products within and between cattle herds. Glycoprotein GP51 in the blood is responsible for cattle immune responses to BLV. This virus has been previously dete...

Immunity to Avian Leukosis Virus: Where Are We Now and What Should We Do?

Avian leukosis virus (ALV) is an avian oncogenic retrovirus causing enormous economic losses in the global poultry industry. Although ALV-related research has lasted for more than a century, there are no vaccines to protect chickens from ALV infection. The interaction between chickens and ALV remains not fully understood especially with regard to the host immunity. The current review provides a...

Disease resistance and immune response genes in cattle: strategies for their detection and evidence of their existence.

The possibility of breeding or genetically engineering cattle for resistance to disease has tremendous potential for increasing the efficiency of milk and meat production. In cattle and other species, major genes that control humoral and cellular immune responses to a variety of antigens have been mapped to a chromosomal region known as the major histocompatibility complex. However, resistance ...

Productive and reproductive performance in cattle infected with bovine leukosis virus.

Economic losses caused by enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) have been of interest since World War II, when the neoplastic form of EBL increased dramatically in Europe. Olson (1974) and House et al. (1975) showed that animals with lymphosarcoma caused by the bovine leukosis virus (BLV) had reduced milk yields, a less efficient reproductive performance and high veterinary costs and mortality rates, ...
