Hypoglycemia and the central nervous system.

چکیده
The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) convincingly demonstrated that intensive insulin therapy reduces the microvascular complications associated with diabetes, including retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy. However, intensive insulin therapy that lowers blood glucose towards normal levels also significantly increases the risk for hypoglycemia. Moderate hypoglycemia can acutely affect cognitive ability, leading to temporary stupor and confusion. Severe hypoglycemia can lead to seizures, coma, and even death. Therefore, hypoglycemia causes recurrent morbidity that can interfere with the ability of individuals to work, as well as to perform activities of daily living. The fear of a hypoglycemic reaction is also a barrier to intensive insulin therapy.

Neonatal hypoglycemia.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Hypoglycemia in the newborn may be associated with both acute decompensation and long-term neuronal loss. Studies of the cause of hypoglycemic brain damage and the relationship of hypoglycemia to disorders associated with hyperinsulinism have aided in our understanding of this common clinical finding. RECENT FINDINGS A recent consensus workshop concluded that there has been ...
متن کاملReview of the Aspergillosis and Report A Case of its Central Nervous System
SUMMARY Because Aspergillus SP. are one of the most common airborne fungal contaminants in all parts of the world, the incidence of Aspergillosis is relatively high, but will not be diagnosed in some cases. In this survey we decided to review the importance of Aspergillosis and also to report a case of its Central Nervous system involvement in a patient without Immunodeficiency.
متن کاملNovel mechanism for counter‐regulatory responses to hypoglycemia
In the central nervous system, especially in the hypothalamus, the energy status in the body is assessed by glucose-sensing neurons since glucose is the major fuel in the central nervous system. Glucose sensing mechanisms also have a significant role in prevention of hypoglycemic bouts. In a recent report, Fan and colleagues proved a novel type of glucose-exited neurons which detect hypoglycemi...
متن کاملA Case Report of Primary Angiitis of the Central Nervous System
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS) is an inflammatory vasculitis with very low frequency and prevalence. It is not clear why the inflammatory process of this disease is limited to cerebrovascular disease without systemic manifestations. A case of primary angiitis of the central nervous system with cerebrovascular manifestations is reported here. C...
متن کاملAutoimmune Hemolytic Anemia preceding the Diagnosis of Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma
In this study, a 2.5-year-old boy suffering from a febrile seizure with normal laboratory tests and a history of immune hemolytic anemia was examined. Brain MRI demonstrated some tumors in the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobe that corroborated the pathology results of primary central nervous system lymphoma for the patient. The patient was treated with high- dose of Methotrexate. Our re...
متن کاملEvaluation of changes in testosterone concentration of the rat central nervous system following progesterone administration
Neurosteroids are steroids that are produced in the central nervous system (CNS). While progesterone and dehydroepiandostendione (the precursors of testosterone) are among the identified neurosteroids, it is not clear that testosterone could be considered as a neurosteroid. The testosterone synthesis has been demonstrated in the brain of castrated frog, but not in the rat brain. In the present ...
