ABSTRACT The dual-pump coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) method is used to measure temperature and the relative species densities of N2, O2 and H2 in two experiments. Average values and rootmean-square (RMS) deviations are determined. Mean temperature measurements in a furnace containing air between 300 and 1800 K agreed with thermocouple measurements within 26 K on average, while mean mole fractions agree to within 1.6 % of the expected value. The temperature measurement standard deviation averaged 64 K while the standard deviation of the species mole fractions averaged 7.8% for O2 and 3.8% for N2, based on 200 single-shot measurements. Preliminary measurements have also been performed in a flat-flame burner for fuel-lean and fuel-rich flames. Temperature standard deviations of 77 K were measured, and the ratios of H2 to N2 and O2 to N2 respectively had standard deviations from the mean value of 12.3% and 10% of the measured ratio.

Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) as a Probe for Supersonic Hydrogen-Fuel/Air Mixing
The dual-pump coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) method was used to measure temperature and the absolute mole fractions of N2, O2 and H2 in a supersonic non-reacting fuel-air mixing experiment. Experiments were conducted in NASA Langley Research Center’s Direct Connect Supersonic Combustion Test Facility. Under normal operation of this facility, hydrogen and air burn to increase the...
متن کاملCARS Temperature and Species Measurements For Air Vehicle Propulsion Systems
The coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) method has recently been used in the United States and Europe to probe several different types of propulsion systems for air vehicles. At NASA Langley Research Center in the United States, CARS has been used to simultaneously measure temperature and the mole fractions of N2, O2 and H2 in a supersonic combustor, representative of a scramjet engi...
متن کاملFemtosecond time resolved CARS spectroscopy of H2-N2 mixtures in the Dicke regime: Experiments and modeling of velocity effects
In this paper, we present measurements and modeling of femtosecond time resolved CARS signal in H2-N2 mixtures at low densities. Three approaches have been used to model the CARS response. The first is the usual sum of Voigt profiles. In the second approach, the speed dependent Voigt profile is used. In the last approach, a new model of the CARS signal is developed which takes into account the ...
متن کاملKinetics and mechanism of the reduction of nitric oxides by H2 under lean-burn conditions on a Pt±Mo±Co/a-Al2O3 catalyst
The kinetics and the mechanism of the selective reduction of nitric oxides (NOx) by hydrogen is studied on a trimetallic Pt± Mo±Co/a-Al2O3 catalyst under oxidising conditions. This system is interesting in view of an exhaust gas control of power plants or lean-burn cars. It can be shown that the NO dissociation is the crucial step, dominating the overall reaction behaviour and that it depends o...
متن کاملCombustion Characteristics of Single Particles from Bituminous Coal and Pine Sawdust in O2/N2, O2/CO2, and O2/H2O Atmospheres
Burning fuels in an O2/H2O atmosphere is regarded as the next generation of oxy-fuel combustion for CO2 capture and storage (CCS). By combining oxy-fuel combustion and biomass utilization technology, CO2 emissions could be further reduced. Therefore, this work focuses on investigating the combustion characteristics of single particles from bituminous coal (BC) and pine sawdust (PS) in O2/N2, O2...
