Constraints on AGN accretion disc viscosity derived from continuum variability

چکیده
We estimate a value of the viscosity parameter in AGN accretion discs for the PG quasar sample. We assume that optical variability on time-scales of months to years is caused by local instabilities in the inner accretion disc. Comparing the observed variability time-scales to the thermal time-scales of α-disc models we obtain constraints on the viscosity parameter for the sample. We find that, at a given L/LEdd, the entire sample is consistent with a single value of the viscosity parameter, α. We obtain constraints of 0.01 ≤ α ≤ 0.03 for 0.01 ≤ L/LEdd ≤ 1.0. This narrow range suggests that these AGN are all seen in a single state, with a correspondingly narrow spread of black hole masses or accretion rates. The value of α we derive is consistent with predictions by current simulations in which MHD turbulence is the primary viscosity mechanism.

Accretion disc - corona and jet emission from the radio - loud Narrow Line Seyfert
We perform X-ray/UV spectral and X-ray variability studies of the radio-loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy RXJ1633.3+4719 using XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations from 2011 and 2012. The 0.3−10 keV spectra consist of an ultra-soft component described by an accretion disc blackbody (kTin = 39.6 +11.2 −5.5 eV) and a power-law due to the thermal Comptonization (Γ = 1.96 −0.31) of the disc em...
متن کاملX-ray iron line variability: constraints on the inner accretion disk
After reviewing the basic physics of X-ray reflection in AGN, we present three case studies which illustrate the current state of X-ray reflection studies. For the low-luminosity AGN NGC 4258, we find that the iron line is much narrower than is typically found in higher luminosity AGN. We argue that this is evidence for either a truncated cold accretion disk (possibly due to a transition to an ...
متن کاملAn accretion disc-corona model for X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei
The hard X-ray emission of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is believed to originate from the hot coronae above the cold accretion discs. The hard X-ray spectral index is found to be correlated with the Eddington ratio Lbol/LEdd, and the hard X-ray bolometric correction factor Lbol/LX,2−10keV increases with the Eddington ratio. The Compton reflection is also found to be correlated with the hard X-r...
متن کاملModels of optical / UV continuum in AGN . Constraints from NGC 5548 monitoring campaign
We analyse the data from the optical/IUE observational campaign of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548 in the context of 10 phenomenological models. On the basis of the optical/UV data as well as constraints from the X-ray observations we can favour one model of the nucleus: an accretion disc with an inner radius cutoff surrounded by a hot corona. The second acceptable model for optical/UV data is a di...
متن کاملAn XMM-Newton observation of Ton S180: Constraints on the continuum emission in ultrasoft Seyfert galaxies
We present an XMM-Newton observation of the bright, narrow-line, ultrasoft Seyfert 1 galaxy Ton S180. The 0.3–10 keV X-ray spectrum is steep and curved, showing a steep slope above 2.5 keV (Γ ∼ 2.3) and a smooth, featureless excess of emission at lower energies. The spectrum can be adequately parameterised using a simple double power-law model. The source is strongly variable over the course of...
