چکیده

Data for D * ± (2010) meson electroproduction in the range 10 < Q 2 < 1350 GeV 2 has recently been presented by the ZEUS collaboration at HERA. We use these results together with their previously published data for 1 < Q 2 < 600 GeV 2 to test whether one can distinguish between different theoretical schemes for charm quark electroproduction. We find that up to the largest Q 2 measured, it is not possible to make such a differentiation. Then we point out the regions where differences between the various schemes arise.

Massless Parton Asymptotics within Variable Flavour Number Schemes

In this note we formulate and investigate theoretical uncertainties for high Q deep inelastic heavy quark (charm, etc.) production rates which arise within collinear resummation techniques from variations of the a priori unknown charm input scale Q0 of O(αs) variable flavour number schemes. We show that Q0 variations constitute a source of considerable theoretical uncertainty of present O(αs) c...

Variable number schemes for heavy quark electroproduction

Heavy quark production has been a major topic of investigation at hadron-hadron, electron-proton and electron-positron colliders. Here a review is given of some topics which are of interest primarily for electronproton colliders. We concentrate on this reaction because a theoretical treatment can be based on the operator product expansion, and also because data are available for deep-inelastic ...

QCD Phenomenology of Charm Production at HERA 1

We compare different schemes for the treatment of heavy quark production in Deep-Inelastic Scattering (DIS). For fully-integrated quantities such as F2(x,Q ), we advocate the use of the General-Massive Variable-Flavor-Number (GM-VFN) scheme; we present some results showing the progress of a Next-to-Leading Order calculation in this scheme. For differential quantities, the Fixed-Flavor-Number (F...

Heavy-quark correlations in deep-inelastic electroproduction

We have completed the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD corrections to the virtual-photon exclusive differential cross sections for heavy quark production in deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering, i.e. e + P → Q +Q +X . Using these results, we have computed distributions which are sensitive to correlations among the heavy quark, the heavy antiquark, and the associated jet. Some predict...

Charm in the Nucleon

A next-to-leading order analysis of inelastic electroproduction of charm is performed using an interpolating scheme which maps smoothly onto massless QCD evolution at large Q2 and photon–gluon fusion at small Q2. In contrast with earlier analyses, this scheme allows the inclusion of quark and target mass effects and heavy quark thresholds, as well as possible non-perturbative, or intrinsic, cha...
