A minimalist view of the syntax-lexical semantics interface

چکیده
This paper presents a restrictive theory of the interface between the lexicon and the syntax. I assume that only a limited amount of lexical information is available at the interface, and, following Borer (1994), that semantic (aspectual) interpretation is assigned at specifiers of aspectual projections, rather than within the VP. Thus, the concept of "Mapping" from lexicon to syntax or the "Linking" of arguments has no meaning in my theory. Instead, the syntax narrows down possible aspectual interpretations of predicates, and aspectual information at the interface forms a constraint on the association of verbs with syntactic structures. 1 The interface between the lexicon and syntax The main question about the syntax-lexicon interface is whether, and to what extent, there exists a correlation between the lexical properties of predicates and the syntactic structures in which they appear. Why should such a correlation exist at all? One good reason is, that a strong correlation between meaning and structure might explain the rapidity of language acquisition: children need not learn syntactic structures of verbs on an item-by-item basis, but rather, make generalizations on the basis of the regular correlation. However, while it is agreed that some correlation between meaning and structure exists, the nature of this correlation differs substantially from one theory to another. Approaches to the syntax-lexicon interface can be characterized according to two parameters, which I adopt from Benua and Borer (1996):

Inverse Linking in Minimalist Grammars
The phenomenon of Inverse Linking has proven challenging for theories of the syntax-semantics interface; a noun phrase within another behaves with respect to binding as though it were structurally independent. In this paper I show that, even within an LF-movement style approach to the syntax-semantics interface, we can derive all and only the appropriate meanings for such constructions using no...
متن کاملSemantic Aspects of Minimalist Grammars
Minimalist grammars are a rich lexicalized syntactic formalism which inherits the depth and wide covering of the generative tradition. Nevertheless up to now there is no straightforward way to extract the predicative structure of a sentence from syntactic analyses and from the predicative structure of the lexical items. In this paper we try to apply to this richer syntactic model the traditiona...
متن کاملA Computational Framework for Non-Lexicalist Semantics
Under a lexicalist approach to semantics, a verb completely encodes its syntactic and semantic structures, along with the relevant syntax-tosemantics mapping; polysemy is typically attributed to the existence of different lexical entries. A lexicon organized in this fashion contains much redundant information and is unable to capture cross-categorial morphological derivations. The solution is t...
متن کاملCase at the Syntax/Semantics Interface
For most theories of semantics cases are irrelevant at best. For these theories the ideal language has fully regimented word order but no morphology. This means that cases have to disappear at the interface from syntax to semantics. The role of syntax is among other to provide a structural substitute for cases. This is also the philosophy of the Minimalist Program, where cases are treated as un...
متن کاملReverse Engineering of Network Software Binary Codes for Identification of Syntax and Semantics of Protocol Messages
Reverse engineering of network applications especially from the security point of view is of high importance and interest. Many network applications use proprietary protocols which specifications are not publicly available. Reverse engineering of such applications could provide us with vital information to understand their embedded unknown protocols. This could facilitate many tasks including d...
