چکیده

Previous medico-legal autopsy diagnoses after sportrelated deaths in our personal experience in Durban included cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, Marfan’s syndrome and ruptured cerebral berry aneurysms. It is regrettable that autopsies were not performed in the above cases. Whether they should have been considered natural or unnatural may be debatable, but postmortem examinations could have served to establish the cause/s and mechanism/s of death without need for speculation, and before considerations on their preventability. Routine autopsy examinations in such instances would enlighten issues of familial/genetic study and counselling, scientific research into this area, and for ‘selective pre-competition screening’ in sport.

Mistakes in a stat laboratory: types and frequency.

Application of Total Quality Management concepts to laboratory testing requires that the total process, including preanalytical and postanalytical phases, be managed so as to reduce or, ideally, eliminate all defects within the process itself. Indeed a "mistake" can be defined as any defect during the entire testing process, from ordering tests to reporting results. We evaluated the frequency a...

Governmental perspectives on evaluating laboratory performance.

The quality of laboratory analytical performance required to support medical decision-making has been defined in four major ways: (a) by the analytical variance of the state of the practice; (b) by the total variance, including analytical and biological variability; (c) by the loss of diagnostic efficiency attributable to analytical error; and (d) by medical-usefulness criteria. From the federa...
