Uniqueness of Blur Measures

چکیده

After discussing usual approaches to measuring blur, we show theoretically that there is essentially a unique way to quantify blur by a single number. It is the variance of position and therefore is given by the second derivative at the origin of the Fourier transform. This somewhat surprisingly implies that blur should be especially sensitive to attenuation of the low frequencies. This is confirmed by a series of experiments. We verify that the blur measure behaves as expected with respect to the standard ”blur” and ”sharpen” tools of usual softwares. We apply our measure to assess quality of cameras, natural images and image processings.

Can Facial Uniqueness be Inferred from Impostor Scores?

In Biometrics, facial uniqueness is commonly inferred from impostor similarity scores. In this paper, we show that such uniqueness measures are highly unstable in the presence of image quality variations like pose, noise and blur. We also experimentally demonstrate the instability of a recently introduced impostor-based uniqueness measure of [Klare and Jain 2013] when subject to poor quality fa...

Improving Super-resolution Techniques via Employing Blurriness Information of the Image

Super-resolution (SR) is a technique that produces a high resolution (HR) image via employing a number of low resolution (LR) images from the same scene. One of the degradations that attenuates performance of the SR is the blurriness of the input LR images. In many previous works in the SR, the blurriness of the LR images is assumed to be due to the integral effect of the image sensor of the im...

A relationship between tolerance of blur and personality.

PURPOSE To determine whether tolerance of dioptric spherical defocus is related to measures of personality. Clinical observations suggest that there is individual variability in tolerance of blur. METHODS A computer-controlled Badal optometer was used to measure just-noticeable blur and just-objectionable blur responses to positive lens defocus. Blur tolerance was defined as the difference be...

Measures of maximal entropy

We extend the results of Walters on the uniqueness of invariant measures with maximal entropy on compact groups to an arbitrary locally compact group. We show that the maximal entropy is attained at the left Haar measure and the measure of maximal entropy is unique.

Lifting for Blind Deconvolution in Random Mask Imaging: Identifiability and Convex Relaxation

In this paper we analyze the blind deconvolution of an image and an unknown blur in a coded imaging system. The measurements consist of subsampled convolution of an unknown blurring kernel with multiple random binary modulations (coded masks) of the image. To perform the deconvolution, we consider a standard lifting of the image and the blurring kernel that transforms the measurements into a se...
