High altitude and house-dust mites.

چکیده
House dust from high mountainous areas of Switzerland contains very few house-dust mites. In contrast to lower-lying regions, only very small quantities of house-dust allergen are found at high altitudes. The cause of this phenomenon seems likely to be the climatic conditions in the high mountains of Europe, where cold air leads to extremely low humidity levels indoors. The soil conditions and a type of construction providing good protection against the penetration of water also contribute to dry conditions in houses. These factors prevent the development of large populations of allergen-producing house-dust mites. The beneficial effect of a stay at high altitudes on patients with atopic asthma is probably due to the low concentrations of house-dust allergen.

Asthma and allergy to house-dust mites in populations living in high altitudes.
Do subjects living in high altitude where house-dust mites are known to be uncommon exhibit a lower prevalence of asthma and allergy to house-dust mites? To answer this question, we compared the prevalence rates of asthma and skin reactions to house-dust mites in two towns with contrasted environments: Marseille, located on the seashore, and Briançon, 1350 m in altitude. The study population co...
متن کاملHouse dust mite fauna in western Anatolia, Turkey.
House dust mites play an important role in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases. Many factors may influence mite growth. The presence of mites is related to mean temperature and humidity as well as altitude. The aim of this study was to analyze the mite fauna in 5 regions of western Anatolia, Turkey, that have similar climatic properties with low mean temperature and humidity, but differ in al...
متن کاملSubtropical acarien profile by topography, seasons and change of house furnishings: 80's blueprint to the future.
BACKGROUND In Hawai'i, mortality and morbidity from asthma are significant. In the 80's, there had been no local studies of topography folklore. There had been only one report of seasonal variation in house dust mite (HDM) density in Hawai'i, and this showed no significant variation in O'ahu's Manoa Valley but a definite variation in Waikiki. There were no studies of complete replacement of fur...
متن کاملEffective Environmental Control Methods: What Works and What Doesn’t
In 1929 Storm Van Leuven published his results on treatment of asthma using a “climate chamber.” His design of a room included maintaining low dust levels and a supply of clean air. This experiment was based on the observation that many asthmatics improved when they spent time in the high altitude clinics in Switzerland (1). It was also well known .50 years ago that patients with asthma improve...
متن کاملCorrelation of total serum IgE and density of house dust mites with severity of Atopic Dermatitis
Background and aim: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing skin disease that commonly begins during infancy and early childhood. Research studies refers to a relationship between exacerbation of atopic dermatitis and exposure to house dust mite (HDM), but the role of HDM in the pathogenesis of AD is controversial. The objecitve of this study was to assess the correlation of density...
