A 39-year-old man reports an eight-hour history of colicky pain in the right lower quadrant radiating to the tip of his penis. He had previously had a kidney stone, which passed spontaneously. Physical examination shows that he is in distress, is afebrile, and has tenderness of the right costovertebral angle and lower quadrant. Urinalysis shows microhematuria. Helical computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis shows a 6-mm calculus of the right distal ureter and mild hydroureteronephrosis. How should this patient be treated?

Most of them managed conservatively, but some of them were complicated and need more p...
متن کاملLunar Phases and Emergency Department Visits for Renal Colic Due to Ureteral Calculus
BACKGROUND Urolithiasis affects an estimated 5% of the population and the lifetime risk of passing a stone in the urinary tract is estimated to be 8-10%. Urinary calculus formation is highly variable and while certain risk factors such as age, gender, seasonality, anatomic abnormality, and metabolic diseases have been identified, not much is known regarding the association of environmental fact...
متن کاملEFFECT OF SUBLINGUAL NITROGLYCERINE ON PAIN RELIEF IN RENAL AND URETERAL COLIC
The effect of sublingual nitroglycerine (TNG) on relieving pain in renal and ureteral colic was studied in a randomized, prospective, double blind and placebo controlled clinical trial. One hundred out-patients between 16-60 years of age from either sex who were admitted to the urology emergency center of Ayatollah Taleghani and Ashrafi Esfahani hospitals were chosen for this study. They w...
متن کاملThe sensitivity of transabdominal ultrasound in the diagnosis of ureterolithiasis.
OBJECTIVES The ultrasonographic diagnosis of renal lithiasis colic is suggested by the existence of hydronephrosis, but the certainty is given by the direct visualization of the ureteral calculus. The aim of this study is to assess the performance of ultrasound in identifying ureteral calculi compared to other imaging methods (abdominal X-ray, urography and computed tomography). MATERIAL AND ...
متن کاملApplication of Skin Electrical Conductance of Acupuncture Meridians for Ureteral Calculus: A Case Report
Renal colic is a common condition seen in the emergency department (ED). Our recent study showed that measures of electrical conductance may be used as supplementary diagnostic methods for patients with acute renal colic. Here, we describe the case of a 30-year-old male subject with a left ureteral calculus who presented with frequency and normal-looking urine. He had already visited the outpat...
متن کاملIncidental diagnosis of diseases on un-enhanced helical computed tomography performed for ureteric colic
BACKGROUND Patients presenting in the emergency room with flank pain suggestive of acute ureteric colic may have alternative underlying conditions mimicking ureteric stones. An early diagnosis and appropriate treatment for other causes of flank pain is important. The majority of centers around the world are increasingly using un-enhanced helical CT (UHCT) for evaluation of ureteric colic. This ...
