چکیده

The authors are to be commended for their work. They have pointed out areas requiring investigation that, when completed, will enable the design of incinerators to be upgraded so that particulate emis sions from the furnace can be minimized. This is a valuable contribution to the incinerator field. In arriving at a mean emission factor of 24 lb per ton, the authors admit to biasing the data in favor of those units on which a large number of tests had been performed. This bias could have been easily eliminated by determining an average for each of the units tested and then determining the average emis sion factor from these unit averages. This would give equal weight to each unit instead of each test run. The difference in mean values for different plants is a measure of the effect of variations in furnace de sign on emission factors only when operating con ditions, refuse composition, and sampling conditions are similar. The wide variation in data from Plant No. 90 would indicate the unlikeliness of similar con ditions, etc., being the case for those uni ts on which only one or two datum points are available. Thus the validi ty of the data from such units, as representative emission factors, must be questioned. Because these are all the data in existence, these emission factors provide a good starting point.

Air pollution from incinerators and reproductive outcomes: a multisite study.

BACKGROUND The few studies that have investigated the relationship between emissions from municipal solid-waste incinerators and adverse pregnancy outcomes have had conflicting results. We conducted a study to assess the effects of air emissions from the eight incinerators currently in operation in the Emilia-Romagna Region of Italy on reproductive outcomes (sex ratio, multiple births, preterm ...

Emissions investigation for a novel medical waste incinerator.

Medical waste constitutes one of the waste streams that should be dealt with special priority due to its potential negative impact on public health and on the environment. Incineration is a process that is widely used for the treatment of medical waste. However, self-supporting combustion of medical waste cannot avoid releasing many hazardous pollutants into our environment. The most favored so...

Survey on the health effects of chronic exposure to dioxins and its accumulation on workers of a municipal solid waste incinerator, rural part of Osaka Prefecture, and the results of extended survey afterwards.

In September 1998 the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced that high concentrations of dioxins were detected in the samples of soil near the incinerator and ash, drainage, sludge and others remained in the furnace and air pollution control devices of municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) in rural part of Osaka Prefecture. According to the results the Ministry of Labor immediately organiz...
