چکیده
either stable or unstable with respect to small perturbations away from the steady state. If all small perturbations (in any direction in the n-dimensional state space of the reaction network) eventually return to x, then this steady state is said to be (locally asymptotically) stable. If there exist small perturbations (in some particular directions in state space) that depart from x and never return, then the steady state is said to be unstable.

Bistability and Self-oscillations in Cell Cycle Control
A qualitative model of cell cycle control is presented and its transition from bistability to limit cycle oscillations and vice versa is discussed. The origin of this model is the two-dimensional system of kinetic equations introduced by Novak–Tyson which is illustrated computationally and analytically. For this purpose a qualitative model is numerically reconstructed from the steady state beha...
متن کاملMinimal models for cell-cycle control based on competitive inhibition and multisite phosphorylations of Cdk substrates.
The eukaryotic cell cycle is characterized by alternating oscillations in the activities of cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) and the anaphase-promoting complex (APC). Successful completion of the cell cycle is dependent on the precise, temporally ordered appearance of these activities. A modest level of Cdk activity is sufficient to initiate DNA replication, but mitosis and APC activation require ...
متن کاملCoupling oscillations and switches in genetic networks
Switches (bistability) and oscillations (limit cycle) are omnipresent in biological networks. Synthetic genetic networks producing bistability and oscillations have been designed and constructed experimentally. However, in real biological systems, regulatory circuits are usually interconnected and the dynamics of those complex networks is often richer than the dynamics of simple modules. Here w...
متن کاملA comprehensive reduced model of the mammalian cell cycle
The cellular division cycle is an essential process to ensure healthy tissue homeostasis, which can, due to its periodicity, be interpreted as a biological oscillator. This work focuses on identifying the main mechanisms underlying cell cycle rhythms in mammals and propose a mathematical model to describe them. The model is based on post-translational modifications of cyclin Bcdk1, also called ...
متن کاملBiological switches and clocks.
To introduce this special issue on biological switches and clocks, we review the historical development of mathematical models of bistability and oscillations in chemical reaction networks. In the 1960s and 1970s, these models were limited to well-studied biochemical examples, such as glycolytic oscillations and cyclic AMP signalling. After the molecular genetics revolution of the 1980s, the fi...
