Impact of Varroa Mite

چکیده
Varroa mite infestation was first detected in Iraq in the mid 1980s (Food and Agriculture Organization). High level of the infestation was found in all apiaries of Dohuk region and may act as a risk factor to the bee health. The mite V. destructor feeds on the haemolymph of the developing and adult bees. The structures that may be directly affected by Varroa mite infestation are the bee glands. Therefore this study aimed to investigate the effect of the parasitic mite V.destructor on the mandibular and hypopharyngeal glands of A. mellifera in the late summer 2013. Our results show significant differences in the size of hypopharyngeal gland acini in newly emerged workers infested with 1–3 mites compared to non-infested newly emerged workers, while only newly emerged workers infested with 3 mites showed significant differences in the size of mandibular glands as compared to non-infested newly emerged workers. Management strategies of the mid and late summer treatment are necessary to keep the mite population at low levels before and during the period when the winter bees emerge.

The Varroa mite has many deleterious impacts on honey bee colonies. These impacts are well known and include, for example, the weakness of honey bees by feeding on the haemolymph (Rosenkranz et al. 2010), transportation of viruses to host bees including Kashmir bee virus (Chen et al. 2004), suppresses the immunity of honey bees (Shen et al. 2005), impact bee wing Shape (Cakmak et al. 2011) and ...

Extended Abstract Introduction and Objective: Varroa infestation is undoubtedly the greatest threat and challenge facing Apiculture today. This external parasite inevitably lives in the bee colony and causes irreparable damage to its colony and the subsequent honey production. One of the proposed strategies in this regard is the use of pesticides, which have a negative impact on the health of ...
متن کاملThree QTL in the honey bee Apis mellifera L. suppress reproduction of the parasitic mite Varroa destructor
Varroa destructor is a highly virulent ectoparasitic mite of the honey bee Apis mellifera and a major cause of colony losses for global apiculture. Typically, chemical treatment is essential to control the parasite population in the honey bee colony. Nevertheless a few honey bee populations survive mite infestation without any treatment. We used one such Varroa mite tolerant honey bee lineage f...
متن کاملInfestation and distribution of the mite Varroa destructor in colonies of Africanized bees.
Whereas in several parts of the world varroa is the major pest affecting apiculture, in others the parasite is unknown to many beekeepers because its damage to bees is minor. The impact of the mite Varroa destructor is related to the climatic conditions and the races of Apis mellifera bees in each region where the pest exists. In the present study, the current level of infestation by the mite w...

The varroa mite (Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman) is an ecto-parasite of the Western honey bee (Apis mellifera) and is distributed worldwide. Because A. mellifera colonies almost always die within two to three years after mite infestation, if not treated, feral bee colonies (unmanaged colonies in the wild) in U.S. were almost totally wiped out by this mite around 1995, less than a decade...

Over the past fifty years, annual honeybee (Apis mellifera) colony losses have been steadily increasing worldwide. These losses have occurred in parallel with the global spread of the honeybee parasite Varroa destructor. Indeed, Varroa mite infestations are considered to be a key explanatory factor for the widespread increase in annual honeybee colony mortality. The host-parasite relationship b...
