Luminous Organs of Fish Which Emit Light Indirectly

چکیده
INTRODUCTI9N THERE ARE MANY REPO~TS of luminous fishes, all of which, in earlier days, were taken from the deep seas. Luminous organs were found on the sides of the bodies, on the barbels, or on the antennae. In ourward 'appearance these fishes were strangely shaped and feebl y developed, with soft bones and loose muscles, and it was assumed that such 'unusual fishes belonged exclusively to the deepsea fauna. The material examined was invariably dead and damaged. It might have been newly .caught, or else had been preserved in formalin or in alcohol for an indefinite period. There seems to be very little record of observations on living material , 'and only the , morphology of the organs of these fishes was studied. The organs were never really understood, and were mistaken for sensory organs, electric organs, or secondary eyes, or they were simply referred to as eye-like organs. , In the early days bacteriological knowledge, especially knowledge of luminous bacteria was not far advanced, and fish which became luminous after death as a result of contamination by saprophytic luminous bacteria were mistaken for true luminous fishes. Recent advances in the study of these interesting problems of luminosity have shown that luminous fishes are not confined to the deep-sea fauna, but may be found among the fauna of the shallow and coastal waters of the sea, and that luminosity may be caused by luminous bacteria. Moreover these studies have revealed that luminous bacteria play an important role in the production of light in

The Luciferin-luciferase Reaction in a Fish, Parapriacanthus Beryciformis, of Newly Discovered Luminescence.
Although bioluminescence, in general, presumably depends on the presence of a specific enzyme-substrate system, extracts of heat-labile ("luciferase") and heatstable ("luciferin") components which emit light when mixed (the luciferin-luciferase reaction) have been definitely obtained from only seven1 of the many types of luminescent organisms known, viz., certain bivalves (Pholas, Roceltaria), ...
متن کاملEvidence of luminous bacterial symbionts in the light organs of myctophid and stomiiform fishes.
The myctophids and stomiiforms represent two common groups of luminous fishes, but the source of luminescence in these animals has remained undetermined. In this study, labeled luciferase gene fragments from luminous marine bacteria were used to probe DNA isolated from specific fish tissues. A positive signal was obtained from skin DNA in all luminous fishes examined, whereas muscle DNA gave a ...
متن کاملDevelopmental and microbiological analysis of the inception of bioluminescent symbiosis in the marine fish Nuchequula nuchalis (Perciformes: Leiognathidae).
Many marine fish harbor luminous bacteria as bioluminescent symbionts. Despite the diversity, abundance, and ecological importance of these fish and their apparent dependence on luminous bacteria for survival and reproduction, little is known about developmental and microbiological events surrounding the inception of their symbioses. To gain insight on these issues, we examined wild-caught larv...
متن کاملLuminous Phenomena of Earthquakes: Observations and Theories
Over the past few years, different theories (piezoelectric, positive holes, friction-vaporization, exo-electron emission, tribo- or fracture electrification) have been presented for the interpretation of earthquake lights. Although these theories can interpret earthquake luminous, each suffer from particular problems. There are also ambiguities and questions about the location of the light, the...
متن کاملFunctional physiology of lantern shark (Etmopterus spinax) luminescent pattern: differential hormonal regulation of luminous zones.
Lantern sharks are small deep-sea sharks that harbour complex species-specific luminescent photophore patterns. The luminescent pattern of one of these sharks, Etmopterus spinax, is made up of nine luminous zones. Previous experiments revealed that in the largest of these zones (ventral zone), photophores are under hormonal control, light being triggered by both melatonin (MT) and prolactin (PR...
