Anatomical study of the human ansa cervicalis nerve and its variations

چکیده
With the expanding use of the ansa cervicalis nerve for laryngeal reinnervation procedures. So the aim of this work was to study the anatomical variations of ansa cervicalis in its roots, course and branching pattern. Twenty five Egyptian necks (50 sides) were dissected. The results showed that the ansa cervicalis (AC) consisted of two roots: superior and inferior roots. These two roots joined together to form a nerve loop. The superior root of AC originated from the hypoglossal nerve in 100%.The superior root of AC descended in front of the external carotid artery in 68% and in front of the internal carotid artery in 32%. The inferior root of AC was derived from the ventral rami of C2 and C3 in 84% and from C2 in 16%. There were four morphological forms of the loop of ansa cervicalis: IU-shaped loop in 84%. IIY-shaped loop in 8%. IIIdouble fused Y-shaped loop in 4%.VIdouble separate Y-shaped loop in 4%. The superior root of AC gave a branch to the superior belly of omohyoid in 96% and a branch to sternomastoid in 24% . The inferior root of AC gave a branch to inferior belly of omohyoid and a communicating branch to phrenic nerve in 4%. These anatomical variations of the ansa cervicalis can be used in surgical procedures such as reinnervation of the laryngeal muscles following the damage of recurrent laryngeal nerve and to avoid the iatrogenic injuries of this nerve during the surgical operations of the neck.

AbsractA rare variant of ansa cervicalis was discovered during dissection of the neck in amale cadaver. The superior root of the Ansa cervicalis was formed by the C1 ventralramus. It accompanied with the vagus nerve in place of the hypoglossal nerve and descendedinto the carotid sheath with it. Moreover the C1 ventral ramus formed fromthe sheath and joined the inferior root from C2 and C3 ventr...

A rare variant of ansa cervicalis was discovered during routine dissection of the neck in a male cadaver. The superior root of the Ansa cervicalis was formed by the C1 ventral ramus. It fused with the vagus nerve in place of the hypoglossal nerve without any connection and descended into the carotid sheath with it. Then, C1 ventral ramus formed from the sheath and joined the inferior root from ...

During the past few years, researchers and practitioners have developed novel techniques, using ansa cervicalis to innervate muscles of the larynx paralyzed due to surgical procedures carried out in the chest and neck areas. During routine dissection of a middle-age male cadaver, an unusual course of the superior root of the ansa cervicalis was observed. In this case, the su...

Ansa cervicalis (ansa cervicalis profunda, ansa nervi hypoglossi) is one of the nerve connections in the human body. Two roots make up the ansa cervicalis –radix superior and radix inferior. Its sources include the ventral rami of the cervical spinal nerves; ansa innervates all infrahyoid muscles except for the thyrohyoid muscle [1,2]. In the past few years, there has been a development in the ...
متن کاملVariations in the anatomy of ansa cervicalis.
With the emerging utilisation of ansa cervicalis in nerve reconstructive surgery, it is important for surgeons to be conversant with the anatomy of these nerves. This descriptive cross sectional study aimed at describing the morphology and topographic anatomy of ansa cervicalis. We examined 38 adult human formalin-fixed cadavers. The superior root was present in 38 (100%) cases and 37 (97%) cas...
