Optimal Migration

چکیده
We ask what level of migration would maximize world welfare. We nd that skill-neutral policies are never optimal. An egalitarian welfare function induces a policy that entails moving mainly unskilled immigrants into the rich countries, whereas a welfare function skewed highly towards the rich countries induces an optimal policy that entails a brain-drain from the poor countries. For intermediate welfare functions that moderately favor the rich however, it is optimal to have no migration at all.

A Near Optimal Approach in Choosing The Appropriate Physical Machines for Live Virtual Machines Migration in Cloud Computing
Migration of Virtual Machine (VM) is a critical challenge in cloud computing. The process to move VMs or applications from one Physical Machine (PM) to another is known as VM migration. In VM migration several issues should be considered. One of the major issues in VM migration problem is selecting an appropriate PM as a destination for a migrating VM. To face this issue, several approaches are...
متن کاملReverse Time Migration with Optimal Checkpointing
The optimal checkpointing algorithm (Griewank and Walther, 2000) minimizes the computational complexity of the adjoint state method. Applied to reverse time migration, optimal checkpointing eliminates (or at least drastically reduces) the need for disk i/o, which is quite extensive in more straightforward implementations. This paper describes optimal checkpointing in a form which applies both t...
متن کاملIntermediate Migration Yields Optimal Adaptation in Structured, Asexual Populations
Most evolving populations are subdivided into multiple subpopulations connected to each other by varying levels of gene flow. However, how population structure and gene flow (i.e., migration) affect adaptive evolution is not well understood. Here, we studied the impact of migration on asexually reproducing evolving computer programs (digital organisms). We found that digital organisms evolve th...
متن کاملOptimal migration energetics of humpback whales and the implications of disturbance
Whales migrate long distances and reproduce on a finite store of energy. Budgeting the use of this limited energy reserve is an important factor to ensure survival over the period of migration and to maximize reproductive investment. For some whales, migration routes are closely associated with coastal areas, exposing animals to high levels of human activity. It is currently unclear how various...
متن کاملMaximal migration of human smooth muscle cells on fibronectin and type IV collagen occurs at an intermediate attachment strength
Although a biphasic dependence of cell migration speed on cell-substratum adhesiveness has been predicted theoretically, experimental data directly demonstrating a relationship between these two phenomena have been lacking. To determine whether an optimal strength of cell-substratum adhesive interactions exists for cell migration, we measured quantitatively both the initial attachment strength ...
