چکیده

In this paper, we present data from three Norwegian dialect types, NOR-1, NOR-2 and NOR-3, which differ with respect to the verb second (V2) requirement in wh-questions: NOR-1 (represented by Standard Norwegian) requires V2 in all main clauses, NOR-3 (represented by the Nordmøre dialect) lacks this requirement in all wh-questions, while NOR-2 (represented by the Tromsø dialect) lacks the requirement in questions with a short wh-word. Focusing on NOR-2, we will show that the choice of word order (V2 or V3) is dependent on the information status of the subject. We will argue that this can be related to the position subjects have in the IP domain, more specifically that given subjects occur in Spec-AgrSP and new information subjects occur in SpecTP. Furthermore, based on the split-CP analysis we will account for the word order differences in the three Norwegian dialect types by postulating a parameterized requirement for filling different C heads. The analysis proposed will also account for why the complementizer som is inserted in NOR2 and NOR-3 whenever the wh-constituent is the subject of the clause. In addition, on the basis of a comparison with Norwegian we will provide an analysis of the English subject/oblique asymmetry in wh-questions, i.e., of the fact that there is no auxiliary inversion/do-support in main clause subject wh-questions.

Microvariation as Diachrony: A View from Acquisition

This paper discusses some microvariation found in main clause wh-questions in Norwegian dialects, where V2 (verb-second) word order occurs alongside non-V2. The microvariation is related to the type of wh-constituent present and is argued to represent different stages of a diachronic development (see also Vangsnes 2005, Westergaard 2005). The paper investigates a corpus of spontaneous speech fr...

Diachronic Change from the Perspective of First Language Acquisition: A Study of the Word Order of Wh-questions in Present-day Norwegian Dialects

In this paper I investigate some child and adult data from an acquisition corpus of spontaneous conversation of some North Norwegian (NN) dialects, focusing on the word order of wh-questions. As is well known, many dialects do not have a strict V2 requirement in this clause type, and this is often interpreted as a process of diachronic change in the direction of non-V2 (e.g. Vangsnes 2004, West...

The Interaction of Input and UG in the Acquisition of Verb Movement in a Dialect of Norwegian

1. Introduction In this paper it will be argued that a principle of information structure provided by Universal Grammar (UG) may interact with input in the acquisition of word order. In a study which investigates three children from the age of approximately 1;9 to 3 acquiring a Northern dialect of Norwegian, it has previously been shown that word order patterns in certain types of wh-questions ...

Wh-Questions\' Expression in Persian-speaking Children: A Comparison Between Spontaneous and Elicited Probes

Objectives: Studies have shown that most children before the age of 5 are capable to comprehend and express wh-questions in daily conversations. This study aimed at comparing the ability of wh-questions’ production in 4- to 6-year-old children in spontaneous and elicited conditions. Methods: In this descriptive-analytic study, 4- to 6-year-old Persian-speaking children (N = 72) were selected r...

A prosodic analysis of three types of Wh-phrases in Korean.

Wh-phrases in Korean are ambiguous due to the lexical ambiguity of "wh" words: wh-pronouns as in a wh-question, or indefinite pronouns as in a yes/no-question. Furthermore, since a wh-word in Korean is in-situ (i.e. not moved to the front of a sentence as in English), wh-questions are not distinguished from echo questions in their surface forms. In this paper, we investigated prosodic character...
