چکیده

The problem of transmission of human leprosy to laboratory animals remains unsolved, and presents a serious barrier to the study of the disease. Very many attempts have been made without success to produce the infection in animals, usually without but sometimes with attempts to suppress their defence forces. In approaching this problem it seemed to be logical to undertake to lower the native resistance of the animal to be used. The experiments were unavoidably conducted on a rather empirical basis, since the factors which govern resistance and susceptibiltiy are still unknown. Until more basic research is done to obtain fundamental information concerning the pathogenesis of the disease, and concerning factors which influence the hostparasite relationship and determine the outcome of the infection, the probability of success in the experimental transmission of human leprosy is rather small. Studying the behavior of macrophages from susceptible and resistant animals toward the murine leprosy bacillus (24,25), some observations were made which suggested the possibility of transmission of rat leprosy to the resistant guinea-pig. The theoretical basis, the experimental set-up, and the negative and the positive results obtained will be reported here, since the experiment may serve as a model for similar studies with the human leprosy bacillus. The problem can be formulated as follows: Would it be possible to transfer experimentally into a resistant host a chronic infectious disease caused by an obligate intracellular parasite, characterized by an intense tendency to invade specific host cells and by extreme susceptibility to extracellular inhibitors? The following factors must be taken into consideration.

Silver nanoparticle induced muscle abnormalities : A sub-chronic dermal assessment in guinea pig

Nanosilver has recently been recognized as an antimicrobial agent. Although this nanoparticlecan be used in medical applications but its dermal and systemic toxicity via dermal exposure hasnot been completely determined yet. The aim in this study was to investigate the potential dermaltoxicity of Nanosilver in subchronic method. Before the colloidal silver nanoparticle toxicityevaluation, their...

Effect of Sodium Valproate on Ouabain-Induced Arrhythmia in Isolated Guinea-Pig Atria

Sodium valproate (SV), an antiepileptic drug has several mechanism of action. It inhibits voltage sensitive Na+ channels and reduces intracellular Na accumulation. These actions are similar to that of both phenytoin and carbamazepine. We have investigated the direct cardiac action of SV and its effects on ouabain-induced arrhythmia in isolated guinea-pig atria. The guinea-pig atrium was dissect...

Action of histamine and antihistamine on the ingestion of murine leprosy bacilli by macrophages of the rat and the guinea-pig.

The discovery of synthetic antihistaminic substances has had a great influence on studies of the cellular defense mechanism. Experiments with antihistamines have permitted better understanding of the functioning of certain defence processes. These substances inhibit the formation of the first barrier against bacterial invaders, and also the phagocytic activity of fixed (8,9, 10) and mobile (4, ...

Background & Aim: Abdominal surgery may lead to intra-abdominal adhesion. Therefore scientists suggest different methods to prevent this problem. Use of heparin, by its mechanism of coagulation pathway inhibition, is one of these methods. The aim of this study was the comparison of various methods of heparin administration in prevention of post-surgical abdominal adhesion. Materials and Met...

Presence of prejunctional D2-dopaminoceptors and α2-adrenoceptors on the cholinergic nerve of the common bile duct of guinea pig

On most adrenergic and cholinergic nerve terminals, prejunctional α-adrenoceptors belonging to the α2-subtype have been identified. Activation of these receptors will decrease the release of norepinephrine. It has been reported that several isolated tissue preparations contain prejunctional dopamine receptors, the stimulation of which inhibits neurotransmission. It has remained uncertain whethe...
