چکیده
We have obtained optical and infrared photometry of the soft X-ray transient GRO J0422+32. From this photometry, we find a secondary star spectral type of M1, and an extinction of AV = 0.74±0.09. We present the first observed infrared (J-, H-, and K-band) ellipsoidal variations, and model them with WD98, a recent version of the Wilson-Devinney light curve modeling code. Assuming no significant contamination of the infrared light curves, we find a lower limit to the inclination angle of 43 corresponding to an upper limit on the mass of the compact object of 4.92M⊙. Combining the models with the observed spectral energy distribution of the system, the most likely value for the orbital inclination angle is 45 ± 2. This inclination angle corresponds to a primary black hole mass of 3.97 ± 0.95M⊙. Thus we contend that J0422+32 contains the lowest mass stellar black hole reported, and the first to have a measured mass that falls in the 3 – 5 M⊙ range. We consider stationary, axially and equatorially symmetric systems consisting of a central rotating and charged degenerate black hole and surrounding physically realistic matter. We show that a + Q = M always holds, where a = J/M is the black hole’s intrinsic angular momentum per unit mass, Q its electric charge and M the well known black hole mass parameter introduced by Christodoulou and Ruff...

In light of recent evidence suggesting a nonzero present-day cosmological constant [1], Adams, Mbonye, & Laughlin[2] have considered the evolution of black holes in the presence of vacuum energy. Using the assumption that Λ remains constant with time and a conjecture based on a paper by Mallett [3], they reach the remarkable conclusion that black holes with current mass greater than ∼ 2 × 10 −9...
متن کاملThe Mass Distribution in the Elliptical Galaxy Ngc 3377 : Evidence for a 2 108 - M
This paper is a study of the mass distribution in the central 35 00 ' 1.7 kpc of the E5 galaxy NGC 3377. Stellar rotation velocity and velocity dispersion prooles (seeing = 0. 00 20 { 0. 00 56) and V-band surface photometry (= 0. 00 20 { 0. 00 26) have been obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. NGC 3377 is kinematically similar to M 32: the central kinematic gradients are steep. The...

We describe a program that we have embarked on to estimate the spins of stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries. We fit the continuum X-ray spectrum of the radiation from the accretion disk using the standard thin disk model, and extract the dimensionless spin parameter a∗ = a/M of the black hole as a parameter of the fit. We have obtained results on three systems, 4U 154347 (a∗ = 0.7 − 0.85...
متن کاملA TiO study of the black - hole binary GRO J 0422 + 32 in a very low state
We present 53 simultaneous photometric (I band) and spectroscopic (6900-9500Å) observations of J0422+32, taken during December 1997. From these we determine that J0422+32 was in its lowest state yet observed, at I=20.44±0.08. Using relative spectrophotometry, we show that it is possible to correct very accurately for telluric absorption. Following this, we use the TiO bands at 7055Å and 7589Å f...
