It was owing in a great measure to an Indian surgeon's (Sir Eanald Martin's) efforts that the Order of the Bath was iirst conferred on British army surgeons, yet how few of Sir Ranald's brethren in India have received it, and how still fewer have been thought worthy of the Indian Order! Wo frequently see wealthy Parsees, and chiefs of doubtful fidelity, receiving the Star of India, while it is withheld from a set of men who have, from the time of Boughton downwards, done more than any, perhaps, to make our presence in India bearable to the people of the country, and whose lives are spent in benefiting alike the native and European.
