Retroactive Interference in the Recall of Simple Sentences.

چکیده
A list of English sentences was learned by the method of free recall. Performance was scored both for sentences recalled precisely and for sentences recalled in content regardless of their syntactic form. Interpolated lists of sentences differing from the original list in syntactic details or in semantic form were used to produce retroactive inhibition (Rl). The Rl for semantic content was negligible; when the interpolated list differed only in syntax and preserved the semantic content of the original list the effect was facilitatory rather than inhibitory. When performance was scored for syntactic as well as semantic aspects Rl was appreciable. The results are interpreted as additional support for the hypothesis that the two aspects, semantic content and syntactic form, pose more or less distinct tasks for the learner.

Memory Without Consolidation: Temporal Distinctiveness Explains Retroactive Interference
Is consolidation needed to account for retroactive interference in free recall? Interfering mental activity during the retention interval of a memory task impairs performance, in particular if the interference occurs in temporal proximity to the encoding of the to-be-remembered (TBR) information. There are at least two rival theoretical accounts of this temporal gradient of retroactive interfer...
متن کاملMemory consequences of looking back to notice change: Retroactive and proactive facilitation.
Three experiments contrasted recollection of change with differentiation as means of avoiding retroactive interference and proactive interference. We manipulated the extent to which participants looked back to notice change between pairs of cues and targets (A-B, A-D) and measured the effects on later cued recall of either the first or second response. Two lists of word pairs were presented. So...
متن کاملDoes Recall after Sleep-Dependent Memory Consolidation Reinstate Sensitivity to Retroactive Interference?
Previous studies have shown that newly encoded memories are more resistant to retroactive interference when participants are allowed to sleep after learning the original material, suggesting a sleep-related strengthening of memories. In the present study, we investigated delayed, long-term effects of sleep vs. sleep deprivation (SD) on the first post-training night on memory consolidation and r...
متن کاملFocusing the search: proactive and retroactive interference and the dynamics of free recall.
Targeting information in long-term memory is an important cognitive ability, but one that is not well understood. In this study, 4 experiments were conducted to examine the influence of proactive and retroactive interference on memory targeting. Participants were given either 1 or 2 lists and asked to recall List 1, List 2, or in some cases both lists. Multiple dependent measures were explored ...
متن کاملRevisiting an old issue: Retroactive interference as a function of the degree of original and interpolated learning.
Prior research has generally shown that the greater the degree of original learning of a list, the greater the amount of retroactive interference that list suffers. In addition, greater learning of interpolated lists produces more retroactive interference. However, in prior research, the degree of learning has typically been confounded with the amount of retrieval practice on the list. Two free...
