Measuring Matching Frictions in the Puerto Rican Labor Market
نویسنده
چکیده
I investigate the role that matching frictions play in the Puerto Rican labor market. The search-theoretical models of the labor market which were developed in the 1980’s led to an explosion of empirical work in the search for evidence of the mechanisms that supported the theory. This paper seeks to measure the degree to which the Puerto Rican labor market is afflicted by congestion externalities. The results obtained indicate that the market has remained relatively uncongested even after a decade of economic stagnation.

Commonly used frictional models of the labor market imply that changes in frictions have large effects on steady state employment and unemployment. We use a model that features both frictions and an operative labor supply margin to examine the robustness of this feature to the inclusion of a empirically reasonable labor supply channel. The response of unemployment to changes in frictions is sim...
