Optimising Visibility Analyses Using Topographic Features on the Terrain

چکیده
The advantages of using the fundamental topographic features of a surface namely the peaks, pits, passes, ridges and channels as the observers (viewpoints) in visibility computation is presented. Considerable time can be saved without any significant information loss by using the fundamental topographic features as observers in the terrain. This optimisation is achieved because of a reduced number of observer-target pair comparisons thus establishing the Reduced Observers Strategy. The method has been demonstrated for a gridded digital elevation model. Due to this selected sampling of observers in the terrain, there is an under-estimation of the viewshed of each point. Two simple methods for assessing this uncertainty have been proposed.

Landforms identification using neural network-self organizing map and SRTM data
During an 11 days mission in February 2000 the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) collected data over 80% of the Earth's land surface, for all areas between 60 degrees N and 56 degrees S latitude. Since SRTM data became available, many studies utilized them for application in topography and morphometric landscape analysis. Exploiting SRTM data for recognition and extraction of topographic ...

Some applications such as the autonomous navigation in natural terrain and the automation of map making process require highlevel scene descriptions as well as geometrical representation of the natural terrain environments. In this paper, we present methods for building high level terrain descriptions, referred to as topographic maps, by extracting terrain features like “peaks,” “pits,” “ridges...

متن کاملVisibility Analysis with the Multiscale Implicit TIN
Visibility analysis is now a key function of many geographical information systems. It is also one of the most contentious tools, as it is notoriously prone to error. The paper will demonstrate the versatility of the Multiscale Implicit Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) for the application of intervisibility analysis at multiple resolutions. This approach allows for the integration of three-...

Hierarchical terrain models describe a topographic surface at di erent levels of detail, providing a multiresolution representation as well as a data compression mechanism. In this paper, we consider the problem of computing the visibility map, with respect to a xed viewpoint, on a hierarchical triangle-based terrain model. This problem presents two aspects: the extraction of a visibility map a...
