Eosinophilic granulomatous reaction after intradermal injection of hyaluronic acid.

چکیده
Sir, Hyaluronic acid, one of the components of the extracellular matrix of dermis and other tissues, has natural hydrating functions with an ability to bind a large volume of water. It can be modified to form an insoluble, cross-linked, high viscosity gel whose dermal injection is suitable for the correction of soft tissue defects and the improvement of facial contouring. Dermal injection is generally believed to be safe without causing any serious adverse reactions. Acute reactions, which include bruising, erythema, and oedema, disappear within a couple of days. Delayed hypersensitivity reactions are considered to be exceptional since hyaluronic acid is non-immunogenic. We recently encountered a rare case of a delayed hypersensitivity reaction that was histologically characterized by a granulomatous change in a woman after the injection of hyaluronic acid for the correction of facial wrinkling.

Cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction to injectable hyaluronic acid gel.
BACKGROUND Injectable hyaluronic acid gel is a non-animal biomaterial used for soft tissue augmentation. OBJECTIVE The dermal implantation of this naturally occurring polysaccharide is reported to be well tolerated by patients, with a longer duration in tissue than bovine collagen without any major local or systemic side effects. We report a case of an acute hypersensitivity reaction in a wom...
متن کاملLate granulomatous reaction to hyaluronic acid associated with rheumatoid arthritis treated with leflunomide
Hyaluronic acid is the currently most used filler in dermatology due to its low risk of adverse events. The objective of this study is to report a case of granulomatous reaction after filling with two types of hyaluronic acid, in the perioral region and in the nasolabial folds. A female patient with rheumatoid arthritis treated with leflunomide presented onset of symptoms 30 months after fillin...
متن کاملCutaneous granulomatous reaction to injectable hyaluronic acid gel.
Injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) derivatives are the most used reabsorbable dermal fillers for soft tissue augmentation today and their utilization is considered safe. We report a cutaneous granulomatous reaction that developed in a woman 5 weeks after the first treatment with a nonanimal HA derivative for the correction of facial wrinkling. We describe the clinicopathological findings and cours...
متن کاملHyaluronic acid pulmonary embolism: a critical consequence of an illegal cosmetic vaginal procedure.
The materials used for cosmetic procedures by physicians as well as illegally by non-medical personnel can cause non-thrombotic pulmonary embolism (NTPE). The case history is presented of a woman with acute respiratory failure after an illegal cosmetic vaginal procedure using hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler by an unlicensed medical practitioner on the day of symptom onset. Histopathological ...
متن کاملComparative clinical assessment of two nasolabial hyaluronic acid fillers: A double-blind, randomized controlled trial
Background: Various fillers have been used for the correction of nasolabial folds. This study investigated the efficacy and safety assessment of two hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers on moderate nasolabial folds. Methods: This study randomized 10 volunteers, aged 35 to 49 years, with moderate nasolabial folds. Volunteers received injections of HA A and HA B gels into the right or left skin folds. Th...
